Chrome plated cornets...Good or bad??

I'm going to begin to play again for the first time in 15 yrs. and I was looking at some cornets on ebay and I have my eye on chrome plated king tempo horn. I'm just not sure of the chrome plating. Does this finish have any affect on the horn's sound at all?(as dumb as that sounds) Also, does anyone have any experience with this type of cornet, wether it be good, bad or indifferent? or is there any other student type cornet that would better suit my situation. Also looking at a Yamaha YCR 231s.
Thanks for any info you guys could offer.

It is not likely to be chrome plated, but either nickel (nickel silver) or real silver. They are mediocre entry-level instruments. If you aren't sure you'll get serious and keep it up after you restart, and wish to minimize your investment, find a music store that will rent you one. If there is not a cornet to be rented, rent a trumpet and switch after you have had a chance to regain some skill. It will be easier for you to decide then what instrument to purchase.

Re: Chrome plated cornets...Good or bad??

I feel fairly certain that I will commit to playing, as I played for about 5 yrs before I stopped. My thought was to purchase a average student quality horn to play rather than renting one for about $20/month. In your opinion though, I could probably do better than that King Tempo or the Yamaha YRC231. Any suggestions of a decent student horn? Thanks for your reply!

I bought my son a King Tempo.
I played around with it and it really plays pretty well! has a nice tone and is made well. If the price is right I'd go for it.

One's as good as the other if in good condition and the price is right. An Olds Ambassador or Conn Director is another good option. If the valves are good and the horn plays OK, you'll want to upgrade after a year or two anyway, unless you luck into an exceptional one. Don't forget to save money for lessons.

Those are good options. I would second the Ambassador and the other cornets on my signature. Good quality horns and didn't cost me over $50 ea. The Olds, local Craigslist: Roth, Shopgoodwill; the Holton, EBay.
