BTW, I occasionally see Holton brass from the 1960's for sale on eBay that is stamped "France", showing that Holton was having another company make some of its instruments back then.

It's not uncommon for certain horn manufacturers to have some of their line of product made elsewhere... Yamaha did make some in the U.S.A., right?

Re: Conn

Yamaha trumpets made in the USA have an "A" tacked onto the end of their serial number. Or at least this used to be the convention.

Re: Conn

It was in 2007 that Yamaha shut down its US factories and moved production elsewhere. I don't believe they are making any instruments here now, but if anyone knows different please enlighten me.

I have numerous Yamaha products, a 34 year old U3 upright grand (an Excellent with a capital E piano), YV1600 Vibraphone, 8310Z Trumpet, flugelhorn, YTR 2320 (with an A after the serial #) student trumpet, stereo components, silent brass... The company began with musical instruments (hence the crossed tuning forks - even on the motorcycles) and has made lots of them. Most, even the student lines, were of quite high quality and were well regarded when other things made in Japan were considered junk. Most of the ones I own are pretty darned good.

We all know what happened when advancing Japanese auto technology caught US makers sleeping, and drove a technical revolution which brought our cars to where they could compete in the world market, irrespective of the place of actual manufacture. It will be interesting to see what happens in the musical instrument business with the decline of craftmanship in US factories and the growth of overseas relocation of manufacturing.

As far as I know, Yamaha America still making pianos, that's all.
They tryed to get a better market quote making instruments in the USA, but sales were not increased in accordance with the investment they did.
It is very sad. Less working positions.
BTW Yamaha still making their famous rotary trumpets -and few other models- in Frankfurt, Germany.
Most of new models are made in China -but under Yamaha watching eye- and Japan.
