conn vintage one

hello friends. another question.
what can you say about the conn vintage one?.
I almost buy the connstellation 52 at woodwind & brass wind.....but they don't have it on stock.....so I start to think about a vintage one.
thank you friends.

Re: conn vintage one

First of all have you played the Constellation and chose it over other horns you've tried or are you just ordering online or via catalog based on specs alone?
I have a Conn Vintage One and love it, but I played bach strads, Yamaha Xeno, B&S Challenger, really any horn I could get my hands on within a certain price range. For me the Vintage One was the best choice.
That said, for any given model of horn, no 2 play exactly alike. Any 2 Bach Strad 180/37 horns with identical specs on paper will not sound or feel exactly the same.
In my opinion, you should only buy a horn after you've played it. If you don't have a good store near you, I know that Woodwind Brasswind has a trial program, though you may be charged a cleaning and or restocking fee for what you send back.

I haven't played one in a while but the ones I tried were good trumpets. Not my cup of tea but fine horns

Re: conn vintage one

The 52B and Vintage One are two pair of shoes.
The 52B is large bore and lighweight (till you don´t use the heavy caps)
It offers a bright and open, full sound.
The Vintage One is more of a regular allrounder being regular weighted, having nickel silver trim and of ML bore. Very versatile sound.
So beware of buying out of the catalogue.

Re: conn vintage one

A great horn is the Yamaha Xeno Artist Model. It is pricey, but I am sure you won't be disappointed. The New York model is brighter than the Chicago model. Depends on what you are looking for.

Depending as example which style you are playing.
What trumpet do you play at the moment? What do you like/not like with that one?
In which direction you want to change?

There is no sense in listing everyone´s darling, because they are all good trumpets, the brand or model doesn´t make a trumpet suiting you.

As example Kanstul produces maybe 30 very good models, which one we should recommend?

Re: conn vintage one

Pretty much any pro model horn by a reputable manufacturer is going to be a good horn.
Generally speaking the following are good solid versatile horns that are satisfactory for most playing situations:
Bach Strad model 180/37 bell
Yamaha Xeno YTR8335
Conn Vintage One - I prefer the one with the rose brass bell over the yellow brass and sterling silver.
Kanstul ZKT1500-B or the ZKT1537
B&S Challenger II

Pretty much any of the above you'd be happy with. It's really a shame that you can try them first though. There are tons of variations and different options on horns and you can't choose the right one out of a book or a web page.
Good luck.

Re: conn vintage one

I currently own an older V1 with the rose brass bell in lacquer and love it. I traded in the same horn with silver plate because the lacquer has the darker sound I was looking for. A few years ago I took my V1 and played it against a new V1 and there was no question that the older V1 played circles around the new horn. It seemed that the tone quality, intonation, and general playability of the older V1 is much better than the new one I tried.

I said all that to suggest that maybe you check out some on line auctions and dealers who have used equipment and find an older one and save some money.

I am not sure exactly when the quality dropped on these trumpets, but I believe it was sometime after the V1 designer left Conn.

Re: conn vintage one

Conn V1 is an outstanding trumpet with a full rich sound of its own. I have a silver plated yellow brass bell and it's still on the dark side. So be careful when choosing the bell type. The rose brass might be darker than you wish. My V1 is also from Fred Powell era.
