Cornet?

I'm thinking about purchasing a Cornet here in the future, but would like all of your input on this one.

My tendency is to probably buy a C cornet, to use in the orchestra. I'm much more of a C trumpet player than a B-flat player, so this seems logical to me. I'm not sure that I'd necessarily use it to play any solo cornet literature...which I'd probably just do on B-flat trumpet (if I'd do it anyway...). All that being said, I wouldn't be opposed to a B-flat cornet either.

What do you all think? And what do you recommend, as far as brands/models. THANKS!!

(Hopefully Manny, Wilmer, Ed, and Tony will chime in too!)

Louie

Louie,

I've got to post on this topic! I've got an $89 1950s Olds Ambassador Cornet and I love it! It plays in tune and has a nice sound. It's great for the cornet solos and dixieland stuff. I don't know if it could handle Symphonie Fantastique, but it would be fun to try. My point is, you could do both if you wanted for not much more money. The Getzen C cornets are good, you may try to find one and check it out.

Eric

Getzen makes an excellent C-cornet. See:

http://www.getzen.com/cornet/custom/3810.shtml

Getzen has the very best valves in the business and makes wonderful trumpets and cornets.

If you play the Bb cornet literature I think it'll come off better on a cornet rather than trumpet, but I suspect that if you get serious about that literature you'll eventually add a Bb cornet, but that can wait for now.

Getzen also makes excellent Bb cornets, but I'd expand that search to include Lawler and Soveriegn. My Lawler cornet has the best intonation and evenness of any horn that I've ever played.

Question: How often does an orchestra require the cornet sound?

For cornets, here is a few that you might want to take a look at.

You can ask Andy if he will make you one in C. info@taylortrumpets.com

If you are not going to play it much, you could checked out the rentals. Might save you from buying one.
