| Mezzo Forte User | Cut a C Trpt? Ok, So, is it possible (advisable) to cut a C trpt tuning slide? Problem, no matter what mpc or person plays my C, it is constantly flat at least 20 cents. I can lip it but then that messes with COP, resonance, etc. I've tried multiple mpcs and even other people. It's not me, it actually is the horn. Buying a new one or even used is out of the question. I barely afford gas to get to school. Any suggestions? Tim |

| Re: Cut a C Trpt? Ghitalla used to play the Hummel in E on a B trumpet (tuning bell C trpt with an insert on the bell tail). There you have it. Your career is set! DrZ btw - what make of horn is it? Last edited by Dr. Zink : 11-27-2007 at 08:41 AM. Reason: error |

The only other option is to shorten the shank on the mouthpiece, but I don't think that you can get 20 cents out of it. I would not mess with the tuning slide! Is it a vintage horn? That would be strange for a modern instrument! |

| Mezzo Forte User | Re: Cut a C Trpt? HAHA, Funny Schwab, that made my day. No sirs, I know it's definitely a C trpt, lol. I play the Zeus stuff. It was all I could afford at the time of purchase and some of them were gifts. Eh, it works for me. But I'm always willing to switch to Monette if ayone wants to throw one my way (preferreably the XLT or LT)! lol. Shorten at the bell huh? Anyone have any price quotes for this. I don't think you understand when I say I'm poor... I really mean it. I've tried shorter mpcs and even a Monette C specific mpc. It helped, but not enough. Thanks for your help. Please don't bash my horn. She's all I have! lol. |

I do not think that there is a free fix for your problem except "lipping up". If the horn is pitched so low it is a manufacturing defect, maybe Zeus would fix it for free - ask them. Shortening the bell means unsoldering it from the horn, cutting off a bit from the part that is attached to the valves, and resoldering it in place. This will move the front of the bell a bit further forward, so make sure that you measure the case so that the horn fits afterwards. This mod is the only one that is "risk free". There is always the possibility of shortening the tuning slide, but there is a great risk that the playing characteristics will significantly change (for the worse). | |
