Re: Decent, Inexpensive Horns

Keep an eye out for the B&S 3137 Challenger 1 Bach clones. Allora is one, Schmidt another. If anyone knows of another stencil name for a 3137 B&S feel free to chime in. Very nice trumpets and I've seen them go in excellent condition as low as $300-400.

And these hors are made in Tiawan not the mainland. If not already mentioned, Blessing make a decent lower priced horn.

Re: Decent, Inexpensive Horns

For you Brits out there, I'd recommend a Boosey&Hawkes Regent II if you can find one. I had one as a kid - a nice bright-sounding, light, good-slotting horn, and ideal 'upper' student material.

NOT the same as the much older Regents, these were made in the 1980s, and I think were all silver-plated. This was a very good horn for me up to my first Strad.

If you didn't load up the truck with Kanstul-made Besson BE-709's when they were on sale at several places recently for $299.95, back that thing up to Musician's Friend: I found them listed there last night for $229.99. That's hard to beat as a combination of decent and inexpensive.

Re: Decent, Inexpensive Horns

I play the Besson BE-709 as my main axe, and it's an absolute steal right now at $229 new with free shipping at Musician's Friend. Get one while you can. You get a sound that's a little dark yet rich with overtones and remarkably consistent throughout the registers, accurate intonation, very airtight valves, zero stuffiness, user-friendly slotting, and a feeling of precision that really grows on you.

I bought mine as a horn to get by with as a comeback player until I can get my dream horn, but it's so much more than just an inexpensive decent horn to get by with. I've been auditioning some pro Bachs and Yamahas lately and the 709 can hold its own against many of them.

The Besson Loyalist

The Besson Loyalist puts the BE800 on the Non-Kanstul list, but has the question mark also.
Brass Review.com - Besson BE800

Here is a Brass Review on the BE800 Reviewer's opinion it is an intermediate horn. Here is on one the 709 Kanstul made, rated very high by the reviewer.

Re: Decent, Inexpensive Horns

How would the quality of a Buescher Aristocrat compare to the Elkhart Built by Buescher?

Like this one: Aristocrat

I have an Elkhart Built by Buescher from around 1960. I think it is a decent horn for the $50 I paid for it on EBAY about 7 years ago.

of course I'd rather have this one: Buescher 400

About the Getzen 300? They are generally cheaper than Yamahas, aren't they comparable?
