![]() | Re: Decent, Inexpensive Horns The older King trumpets were great.Look for a Silvertone or Silver Flair. The older King Liberty horns were also very good and many professional musicians used them.Donald Byrd played a King Silvertone Symphony model. He sounded really good with that horn, but Donald would have sounded good on a student Bundy. What a great player he was. |

![]() | Re: Decent, Inexpensive Horns Once in a while you can get a good buy on Ebay. Someone just bought a Llewellyn for under $200. Spend another $150 or so on dents and valves, and you get a super horn for less than a new student model. FRANK HOLTON TRUMPET - eBay (item 220501952857 end time Nov-02-09 17:03:07 PST) |

![]() | Re: Decent, Inexpensive Horns It seems fashionable to knock any of the stuff coming out of China and probably with good reason. However,do any of the companies there make any reasonable quality stuff that may be useable by a student? |

![]() | Re: Decent, Inexpensive Horns I purchased a Chinese horn once.I didn't have it very long.It was so cheaply made and the tone sounded horrible. An older King(H.N. White),Martin,Olds,Conn,Getzen,Holton,Blessing, in fairly decent shape would be much better. If you buy a Chinese horn I think you will be very dissapointed. |

![]() | Re: Decent, Inexpensive Horns I can second the older HN Whites and "early" Kings ('60's), as I have one of each. Be aware though that the early HN Whites (Liberty, etc) from the '20s and probably 30's take a non-standard shank. Beautiful tone tho'. Bill |

![]() | Re: Decent, Inexpensive Horns I have a pristine, older, Olds Ambassador. Even the finish looks almost brand new. It has one little pin sized ding under the bottom of the bell. I stole it on Ebay for $75.. As far as foreign horns go I have two not made in America. One is a very old French trombone for which I can not find a correct mouthpiece as the bore is too small. The other is a valve trombone made in India. It is interesting but the shape is such that it is unusually brutal to hold for any length of time. The weight is way too far forward on the horn. Oddly it is built like a tank and was surely designed for younger players. It also requires a lot more force to make it sound like a trombone should. |

![]() | Re: Decent, Inexpensive Horns After Charlie Melk got done with it, my 1946 Buescher Aristocrat plays like a champ. That would be the Model 205. If you can find one of those cheap, it's worth your while. Tom
