Decent Intonation on Eb

I am in the market for a new Eb or Eb/D trumpet. Currently I am playing on a blessing Eb/D and the intonation is horrible. The music stores in my town don't carry trumpets pitched in anything but Bb so testing them out has been difficult. While at TMEA in February I played a few and liked some of them. The one that stuck out the most was the new Eb that Edwards is putting out. And then the Schilke was a close second. So here is my question.

1) If I decide to order the Edwards will I be sacrificing a future job because I am not playing an industry standard horn?

2)What other Eb horns have you all played that played well in tune?

JR

May be note quite in the topic,
but in my brass band we have tried different brands Eb-cornets,
and the "best in tune horn" so far, has been the Schilke.

Re: Decent Intonation on Eb

There are lots of great Eb-D trumpets out there, including the Edwards, Schilke, Yamaha, Kanstul, Blackburn, and Bach. If you like the Edwards go for it. Any of the standard brands will serve you well both on the audition circuit and on the job. TMEA is a great place to try horns and choose one to buy. It also would be worth it to buy a plane ticket and visit Dillon Music to try a number of Eb-D trumpets - if you have $3000 to spend on a horn, the cost of the trip is worth it to get a horn that suits your needs. You can also take your old horn along to use as a trade in.

Re: Decent Intonation on Eb

I don't think that you have to worry about brand blindness with an Eb, that is not your daily bread - the C is. Every other trumpet player is in the same boat - lucky because they found one reasonably in tune, or looking for something better.
Schilke is always a safe bet, although I played the Haydn on a borrowed Yamaha 2 years ago and it was incredible - sound AND intonation.

Re: Decent Intonation on Eb

Schilke makes a great Eb/D.....The one with 2 bells and the extra slides......totally on the money.

Stomvi Elite....also very good.

I know that Graham Ashton is currently working on some Eb/D prototypes with the folks at Edwards......you might want to hold off until those hit the market.

all of the above mentioned trumpet companies make fine horns.

have fun in your search!

Re: Decent Intonation on Eb

I also vote for the Schilke. I just bought a slightly used E3L about a month ago, and am really enjoying it. Both the Eb and the D sides are very well in tune, and I love the tone and response. A quick mouthpiece switch helps with timbral adjustments from baroque to symphonic. That said, there are certainly lots of excellent horns out there. Good luck!

Best,
Chas

Re: Decent Intonation on Eb

Schilke will be the first in line, I think, but Stomvi Elite or Master model is close to Schilke....very close !!!

Re: Decent Intonation on Eb

Schilke E3L, Stomvi Elite or Master, Kanstul, Blackburn are just a few you may consider.
