Decent Used Flugel?

I'm in the market for a used flugelhorn. I'm not going to cut a solo album on this thing. Just a flugel that I can show up to a gig and not be laughed at.

Who makes a decent flugel and how much $$$$.

I'm not looking for an incredible instrument here. Just something that plays. Any suggestions?

Used? Probably a Yamaha 631 or 731. New... Jupiter 846 RL. (copy of a 631) $600-$700ish?

Or you might get really lucky and come across a Kanstul that's going for a song (but not likely!)

I loaned my Jupiter 846L to a bandmate over Christmas... he was going to be playing in a church service. Before he performed they made a recording with flugel/organ/piano. Really a nice, superb sound....even his decresc. on a 4th line D slipped into "silence" with no intonation problems. The RL is even more mellow and has a 3rd trigger (which the L does not) so it should be an even better horn.

You could try out a Weril. I bought one for Big Band playing and it's done me good service, well made, nice to play and a good price.
A big band player once told me his flugel was the most expensive mute he ever bought, it made me chuckle!!

I play tested the Jupiter when I bought my flugel and although on the surface the price seems to be right and it's supposed to be a copy of the Yamaha 631, I found that it wasn't even close. I didn't like it AT ALL. By comparisson, it was stuffy and the intonation was poor.

I have used a Yamaha 631 with great success and that is probably going to be your best bet for a used flugel, however, if you can find a used Kanstul and the price is right, get that. I have the Kanstul CCF 925 and although I probably could have afforded the Signature Flugel, this one is fantastic and is probably all I'll ever need.

What is a good price for a used Kanstul? And what model should I look for?

Which just goes to prove that no two horns are identical! I do agree 110% with you on the Kanstul... they are really nice horns, especially if you can get a good, used one. Ever since I discovered Kanstul (via a Besson International trumpet), I've appreciated their quality, attention to detail and customer service. I think they are the greatest "secret" out there and just wish that the mass market outside the drum and marching corps would learn of them... they'd give Selmer and Yamaha a real run for their money!

If you are only going to play your flugel once in awhile don't over look the Yamaha student horn. I have owned 3 flugels - Getzen Eterna - Benge 5 - and a Yamaha 231. The Yamaha was the easiest and the most in tune flugel I have owned. My wife and I were going to buy matching flugels this fall for our quintet and praise band. We both played a ton of different horns and she fell in love with the pro-line J. Baptiste at Sam Ash (made by B&S ). I just never found one that I thought was worth the cost over my old trusty Yamaha. Would I have liked a new horn -you bet I would. The student Yamaha plays so much like a trumpet that I have no problem picking it up after a couple of months and playing it on a job. So don't discount any horn until you play it and take a tuner along when checking flugels. We did not find any Jupiter or Blessing that played in tune ( could just be the horns we tried). old geezer Dave
p.s. played a couple of Bachs and their intonation was way out also. The B&S had a beautiful dark sound and was the most in tune. We used our own mouthpieces when trying the horns
