Destino R.I.P.

Has anyone heard about Doc Severinsen's Destino Trumpet not being made anymore? It was recently being distributed by Buffett-Crampon.

If this is true then its a real tragety! A dream has been lost!!

I have heard it is/was an excellent horn!

Too bad!!!

Re: Destino R.I.P.

I would think that Doc would be the guy to ask if you really want the definitive answer and not repeated rumour; what's on the website? Buffet-Crampon were distributing it from the time they purchased the Besson assets (going back a year or so). He was working out of their booth.

I never got to try a Kanstul Destino, however the original horns were very good trumpets! I don't think you'll see too many of these for re-sale!

They'd end up as collector's items if they didn't play so well. Come to think of it, they might end up as collector's items anyway!

Re: Destino R.I.P.

Yes at this point the Destinos' are not being produced. Doc's contract is up with Buffet and he is not renewing it. As we all have heard Doc has announced his retirement and I believe he is having some thoughts about it, but... If he would semi-retire from his engagements it still would mean practicing as much as he did while playing full time. He has spoken to Bryon Autrey about this but nothing new at this time. As far as the playing qualities of the Destino, they all play very well. Byron has tweeked the horns and saw to it that they were right. I have one of the German Destinos and it can be used in any situation. If they are indeed not going to be produced i agree that they will be very collectable, but those who have them and are using them will probably be hard pressed to part with those horns. For now I guess we can all stay tuned and listen for any new news about Doc and the Destinos.

Re: Destino R.I.P.

Bunny, I got my Destino through Byron Autrey. I was down in his dungeon, I spend a good deal of time there, and he had three left, one was a proto that was a Straub with Kanstul valves, I got the one with the Bauerfein valves. We just got back from the ITG where we spend a week with Doc and the new Kanstul Destinos. Doc had to bless the new ones that were hot out of the factory. I have found this horn to be a solid and free blowing ax and have used it for lead, solo, recording, everything except orchestra which I don't do. It does work well with strings for pit work. I like the sound of the horn as the German horn is a little bigger bore that the Kanstul Destinos. If you get a chance to play one you need to try it and then see how it works for you. I probably will be at the ITG with Byron as he is showing some C trumpets for Kanstul and I will have my horn , so you would be welcome to try mine if you would like.

Re: Destino R.I.P.

Since Doc moved to Mexico, i'm sure he was very busy for the last few months. I think that Buffet has been doing some restructuring, so maybe the Destino just got lost in the shuffle?

maybe all is not lost yet? anyone else feel this waY? I thought the German trumpets were really good and also the kanstul one I tried was really good. how could a good product fail?
