![]() | Different Bach Bells Has anyone had any experience playing on Bach bells that aren't the standard 37, 43 or 72? and for those who may not know which ones they are, I'm talking about the 25, 38 and 65. The bach PDF gives a brief description, but i would like to hear from someone who actually HAS one of these and can give a comparison to a 37 or 72. thanks a bunch

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Different Bach Bells The L bore Bach comes standard with the 25 bell, it is a very good horn. Nice compact sound, and the intonation is better for me than the 37 bell. It doesn't play too open, like some might expect from a large bore. If I played a Bach Bb, it would be this one.

![]() ![]() | Re: Different Bach Bells I have a large bore Bach with 25LR lead pipe and a 43 bell. Bb horn I would have no idea how to describe the sound. Dark, diffuse, focused, tinny? I think you have to play the horn yourself and decide. I will consider selling it in June. A schilke beckons.

![]() | Re: Different Bach Bells I have some horns with the 25, 38 and 65 bells. The 25 is standard on L bore horns and, as a total package, has a mellower sound than a typical ML 37. The 38 bell is standard on M bore trumpets and the older Mercedes instruments from NY and Mt. Vernon. It's adds some fullness to the sound on a M bore trumpet over the 37. The 65, like the 72 is based off the bells on the Bach rotary trumpets and is more cornet like in sound. Mellower and not as brilliant as a ML 37. These are just generalizations. I think someone would be hardpressed to tell the difference on any given horn between a 25, 37,38 and 43 or between a 65 and a 72 if the number wasn't stamped on the bell.

![]() | Re: Different Bach Bells The horn I play on now is a large bore model 25 with gold brass bell from around '68 or '70 - the only one I've seen like it. I find that it has many of the characteristics of the standard 25 bell. Great projection, good sound, etc. It can be a little directional, but does record well. The only real difference is that the gold brass 25 has a little less edge in the sound and can (maybe) fit in classical settings a bit better when used with the right mouthpiece.

![]() | Re: Different Bach Bells I play a Bach Bb with a 26 bell. It is quite a bit bigger all the way than a 37, and Has the best projection and fullness I've ever experienced, without becoming clumsy. It's not made anymore, though.

![]() | Re: Different Bach Bells My 1986 Bach originally started out as a standard 180S ML 37 bell setup. Over the years I tinkered with leadpipes, and then ended up with this combination: 43LR leadpipe with a rounded tuning crook, 65GH (Gold-Heavyweight) bell, gold trim kit with heavy bottom caps. The first time I made music with that setup, it sounded like the biggest, phattest, most chocolate sound I could think of. |

![]() ![]() | Re: Different Bach Bells My experience with Bach trumpets is that, while the different bell sizes respond and sound a little differently, their quality control has been so bad that it's more about finding "a good one" than matching up specific bells/leadpipes/etc. If you decide you really want to get a Bach, play as many horns as possible, even models you don't think you'd necessarily be interested in. -Jimi
