| Dillon's Tomorrow Hey Folks, I'm a comeback player of a 23 year layoff. I've been making what I consider great progress (got my scales down, recently extended my range to an A above the staff, etc.) in the last 2 months that I've been playing. The thing is, I need a new horn. I've got the worst old getzen, so I'm going with my Dad to Dillon's tomorrow (He's a Trombone player). I want a Pro horn, but at my stage of playing, what horns should I consider? |

| Re: Dillon's Tomorrow That is a very loaded question. YOU have to decide if you want a darker horn ... brighter horn ... heavier horn ... lighter horn ... where you want to feel the resistance etc. For "legit" horns ... try the Cannonball; Yamaha Xeno and a Bach Strad (there are tons of options just on the Bach horns) ... for more of a jazz horn ... consider the Yamaha YTR 8335LA Bergeron Model (Wayne Bergeron) ... this is a fabuslous horn and they cannot keep them stocked here; the Kanstul Bergeron #1600 Model ... a Calcchio and maybe a Schilke. It really just depends on if you want more of a jazz horn or a "legit" horn. I prefer more open playing horns and own a Kanstul Model #1600 (Bergeron Model) and a Calicchio R32L. Hope this helps. |

| Fortissimo User | Re: Dillon's Tomorrow I would recommend that prior to your trip you read the info available "here"... http://www.dallasmusic.org/gearhead/ . It's good stuff. Bottom line is... don't get hung up on the name; get hung up on the playing qualities and sound. The audience can't tell the difference in name but they can detect a cruddy sound, poor intonation, etc. |

Thanks Tootsall!, That was a really good read. Most of the models I wanted to try are on his list, so at least I'm going in the right direction. Thanks again!

I'll take your advice on more than a few of them. I lift weights too...not in your league though! I workout with 245 BP 5 sets of 5 - pyramid up to that then back down. Is your screen name from Magnus the great "strongest man in the world" competitor? Anyway, can't wait to blow some new horns tomorrow. I'm going now to check out your website.

| Re: Dillon's Tomorrow Yep the famous Cannonball Trumpet with the "Magic Stone". http://www.cannonballmusic.com/stonetrumpets.php "They'll stone ya when you're playing on your horn.... They'll stone in the very early morn... They'll stone ya when you're tryin' ta play your scales... They'll stone ya when everything else fails. I would not feel so all alone... Everybody's gonna get stoned" Remeber THAT one Manny? *Not their real theme song. -cw- Last edited by Solar Bell : 01-25-2007 at 12:11 AM. |

| Unless your current horn is nearly un-playable my advice would be to put off the search until your chops are a little more conditioned. After just 3 months back you can't really make a sound judgement on what would be a good horn for you. Give your chops at least another 6 months. I base this on my own experiences. After several months my chops were changing and I found my preferences changed as well. What I feel comfortable playing now is not what I chose initially, you may be the same. And although I don't play one, I would add Getzen to that list of instruments. They have expanded the line and so far every one I tried is stellar and would compare favorably to any of the other choices. I also tried pretty much everthing suggested so far and all are great horns. It's the individual characteristics that seperate them. Good Luck! |

| Re: Dillon's Tomorrow Some good advise Scooter01........ When I did the comeback thing and became more serious I went through a phase of changing horns frequently. I thought that the next latest horn or mouthpiece would improve my playing......the real changes came from practise. Having said that it is fun to have a new horn and I think it does help you to stick at it...... it can be an expensive road. I am sure all of the models you want to try will get you in the ballpark....you may want to fine tune in a few years. Let us know how you got on... Walter |
