![]() | Eclipse Flugelhorn You can see from my updated signature that my new Eclipse Red Flugel horn arrived yesterday! WooHoo! Its…MY….PRECIOUSSS…. When I visited FCB to get a trumpet last year I had a brief blow on a copper flugel about to be shipped out. From then on it was only a matter of time (and money) before I knew I’d get one of these horns. I’ve played quite a few flugels but that one, just with a few minutes test, was one of the best ever. To be honest the Taylor Phatboy is up there with it, but its price tag and weirdness for holding somewhat put me off. Anyway a few weeks ago I traipsed down to Luton again to try the flugels. All of the models were in and I spent a few hours trying them out (as well as any trumpets I could find, including the rimless, and the cornet- Big Up to both of these horns). Each flugel has a distinctive sound but I gravitated towards the red brass flugel which has a somewhat warmer sound than the yellow. The copper flugel is lovely with a very distinctive buttery sound, but in my hands lacked the attack I sometimes need and response in the high register. However I don’t think this would be an issue with other players – its just me and I wouldn’t like to state that its anything inherent in the horn. Back to the red brass flugel – there were 2, one a “standard” production model, the other had been slightly changed to give it a more open blow and the bell had been heat treated (or something) which I thought gave it a better sound for me. I thought I’d post a couple of pics (below) and a sound clip http://media.putfile.com/Moon-Alley which I recorded late last night (not at my best but it had to be done) just to show what a good horn this is. Please bear in mind that I wasn’t using professional recording gear, although later in May I’ll post some clips recorded in a real studio with my quintet. For the gearheads among you: The flugel is the red brass bell model, played with heavy caps and a Bach 1 1/2CFL mouthpiece…. and yes you can see my initials forming part of the 3rd valve slide bracing (and why not?). It is finished in scratch-clear lacquer. The tune is Moon Alley by Tom Harrell accompanied by the ubiquitous Jamie Aebersold quartet. The recording was done using a PC with a SoundBlaster 16 PCI card into an AKG C419 condenser mike. I used cooledit pro to record, edit and mix. Some reverb was applied to the flugel track to compensate for the very dead acoustics of my practice room. Any feedback on this would be gratefully received. Thankyou Leigh, John and all at Eclipse for your help, feedback and the making lovely horns ![]() ![]()

| Fortissimo User | OK, OK Leigh... you've convinced me. I'll accept your offer... that WAS to exchange an MR flugel for my Jupiter 846L "straight up". It'll hurt me and I know you're bleeding me dry but I'll do it just so you stop nagging me. Nice tune, MrLT. Thanks for sharing that. |

| New Friend | I've just gone and got me one of those!!!! It's pretty much exactly the same (red brass, scratch clear lacquer) but, obviously, mine doesn't have your initails on the bracing!!! It is a magnificent instrument, though! I find, in comparison to my Getzen, the sound is just as mellow, but the attack is just that bit more responsive. I lllluuuuuurrrve my new flugel! I also bought the MR trumpet, while I was at it, which is equally as delicious. One of these days I really must get around to writing some sort of review - I just find it so hard not to gloat!!! Enjoy playing it...it really is fun to play! K
