| Piano User | Eclipse owners, help? Okay, so, I have a question for you Eclipse owners/players/pros out there. I am looking at perhaps getting an Eclipse, but I have a few questions about the setup I should go for. I am playing on a rimless copper bell right now, which I like--but I don't think I'd want the LC model-I am considering having Leigh make me the first ever copper Solar model, however, I'm keeping my options open. I like the darker sound for the solo work, and whatnot...but I play everything. I play solo, band/ensemble, chamber, lead jazz...I need a chameleon that can do it all, and many have pointed me to the MR bell. Any of you have this particular one, or the LC, and feel like sharing??? Either way, I'm going with scratch gold, and a few polished accents(receiver, caps/buttons, maybe inside bell) Russ

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Eclipse owners, help? Russ, I'm not sure I would go with the LC, (Large Copper) either. Many guys really like the MR, it is the best selling Eclipse model. The MR would probably be a great choice. However if you like your rimless copper bell on your NYTC horn, I would go ahead and have leigh make the copper Solar Bell. He can make it in either medium or large. Scratched gold is a great finish, Eclipse is known for that finish. I play a scratched gold MS with bright gold trim. (Yes, get the inner bell in bright) Whatever you go with, you will be very satisfied with it. BTW- I read that someone doesn't see much of a difference between the MR, medium red bell, and the MY, medium yellow bell. In my opinion there is a huge difference. While I do not like the MR for lead work, the MY is fantastic for that. At least for the way I play and my mouthpiece. -cw-

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Eclipse owners, help? Russ, I don't play Eclipse, but have found that the finest horns respond very well to changes in mouthpiece depth. You may want to consider getting your present rim with a deep vee-cup, deep bowl and shallow bowl. Try that with your present horn, you may discover that buying a "super dark" horn is not the best decision.

| Piano User | Re: Eclipse owners, help? Rowuk, That's kind of what is making me think that the MR would be a better choice. More of an 'all around' horn, and make the changes I need with the leadpipe(I'm probably getting the interchangeable leadpipe option), and with mouthpiece choice. Especially since my lead piece is a Wedge, I am thinking of ordering the 3B or 3C top...matched rims and backbore, but the cup depth would be the difference. Everyone so far has recommended the MR, since I'll be playing so many types of music. Maybe it's time to change from copper.

![]() | Re: Eclipse owners, help? Hi Russ, Like Chuck said, whatever you go for you'll be very pleased with it. A lot of people (including myself) seem to be going for the interchangeable leadpipe which keeps your options open. The leadpipes do make quite a difference to the sound. I chose a solar bell which is bright but if I want a darker sound I can always play flugel. If you can't get over and try a bunch of horns, you might want to talk/email Noel Langley as he has played just about every Eclipse and probably knows more about them than anyone else! But they're all fantastic trumpets (and flugels)! Cheers, Simon |

| Piano User | Re: Eclipse owners, help? Justin, actually, I'm selling it for some very personal reasons. Long story. Let's just say it involves a broken engagement and things of that nature. Trust me, nothing against NYTC, that's for sure, if that's what you're thinking.

| Piano User | Re: Eclipse owners, help? I had considered that also, Tony, but the price is a little bit much for my budget. I wouldn't be able to raise quite that much for probably another year.

Just a thought (and the first thing I thought about when I read your comments)....that's an awful lot to be tinkering around with at the same time. There's a reason horns are put together with matching parts. Not saying this couldn't (and "isn't") a cool thing... but it doesn't mean a cool concept is necessarily good to do. It could (stress - "could" ) screw things up. Sure..could be magical....it's just a lot for a novice (you are not a horn designer...that's what I mean) to be tinkering with. I don't care what brand/model you end up with Russ... find one off the wall of a restaurant...whatever works. I just hope you can - through your own discovery or with someone's help - settle down on something. I realize your head's a little out of sorts with what all you've been through. Just wouldn't want to see you get more frustrated with horn choices. Close your eyes...play some nice music...practice to play beautifully.
