Faddis and Bergeron

Did the Boise State Jazz Festival this weekend as it is just a 4-hour shot from home. Had a chance to hear Wayne B on Thursday night with the Phat Band and Jon F fronting the BSU big band on Friday. Both were awesome. Looked to me like Wayne was playing an old horn--possibly a Yamaha--as the jumbotron (digital!) views showed a horn that had lost quite a bit of its lacquer finish. I think he was not playing the new Yamaha WB--interesting. Jon F's horn was probably gold plated but the reason for the post is to ask someone who knows, what he plays. Again the jumbotron showed clearly that this was a horn without water keys of any kind. Who makes that? I have never seen one like it before. There is nothing that I could find on any of the sites that are out there.

Re: Faddis and Bergeron

I believe Jon plays a Schilke S-42L-JF model

No water keys, no slide nibs.

It is a yellow brass trumpet, gold plated of course.

.......and it weighs a ton. I held the horn last week when Jon sat in with CT and Moody. He sounds amazing and he does not seem to be working hard at all.

I think Wayne plays a raw brass horn - most likely was the Yamaha LA horn.

Re: Faddis and Bergeron

Galen,
Didn't look like raw brass--much too shiny in many places and scratched in others where the plating/lacquer looked worn. The digital jumbotron was extremely clear and they were close ups.

Re: Faddis and Bergeron

Last time I saw Wayne play he was using his old Kanstul that he has had for a LONG time. The laquer is coming off in most places. I found it odd that he was playing that and not the yamaha. So it could have been that horn.

Re: Faddis and Bergeron

WiseOne2 and Solar Bell,
You've nailed it. While I played on a Schilke B6 for years, I didn't know they made one with no water keys and no nibs. Great looking horn. JF is big enough that I am sure weight for the hour that he played was not a problem. It was interesting--again in those digital closeups--to note that his little finger tightened perceptibly around the finger hook and his playing fingers flexed as well on the really high ones. He is human and he was working!

Re: Faddis and Bergeron

Principaltrumpet,
And I think you have solved that one as well. The Yamaha music dealer in Boise had a Yamaha WB there that I believe he used in his clinics, but it is interesting that he used the Kanstul on the gig. Thanks for your reply.

Re: Faddis and Bergeron

Wayne might have been using a prototype Yamaha too.......which may explain the finish. Last I saw the Kanstul it was a worn silver body with a raw brass bell. That particular horn plays beautifully.......I wouldn't be surprised if he still plays it from time to time.
