Flip Oaks "Wild Thing" C trumpet ?!?!

What's the deal?

(sorry for the plethora of posts, but I am home for the holidays and have nothing better to do except practice and play on the internet).

Perhaps you could flesh out your question. Flip makes some of the best instruments in the world, maybe you could be a bit more specific with your question.

I have his Bb and its a huge bell throat. I suspect that the C might need a careful choice of tuning slides from the range available to get the feel right but i could be wrong (not having tried one!).

I am intrigued though as I have ended up playing a lot of C and Eb trumpet this year.

What are your honest opinions on his C trumpets. They look very nice! What do you use them for (symphonic, chamber, other) and what finish did/are you use/using? Thanks!

I have never played his C trumpet, but the Bb seems capable of a wide range of tones depending on which slide you use and which mouthpiece.
When I play it on the very large mouthpieces I use It produces a very large, round sound.
If you listen to Dan McMillion he seems to be able to strip paint with his wild thing so its down to how you blow it and what mouthpiece you use.
There is also a wide range of slides now.
I tend to use the #1 as I find the #2 appears to be easier to play on but the pitching is not as easy in the upper register.

I don't know what his C trumpet would be like, but it has a fairly short lead pipe which is very american and not normally a configuration I would consider in a C trumpet (I use a reverse lead pipe full size Bb leadpipe).

Gordon,

This actually isn’t true... The Flip Oakes ‘C’ Trumpet has a even longer leadpipe then the Bb WT. The ‘C’ also has the over / under, outer/ inner, or also called the reversed leadpipe as well..... Where the Bb WT has a 8 1/2” leadpipe, the ‘C’ has a 9 1/2” leadpipe.. It’s a very very good instrument. I’m pretty certain Tony Carter has one still in stock there in the UK...
