flugelhorn - barrington vs jean baptiste

Hello all.
I was recently reading this thread:
(Can you buy a good flugelhorn for under $400?)http://www.trumpetmaster.com/vb/f139/can-you-buy-good-flugelhorn-under-47215.html
and it brought to mind a few questions because I am currently shopping for an inexpensive flugelhorn but don't want to buy some thing that is complete junk. I won't be playing it too often, so am not looking to invest any more than I have to.

I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with a jean baptiste flugelhorn (http://www.samash.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_FLG128%20Flugelhorn_-1_10052_10002_-49966622_cmCategorySA183009)
or a barrington
(http://www.wwbw.com/Barrington-BRG103F-Bb-Flugelhorn-463756-i1413815.wwbw)

I have been looking locally for a few months for a used flugel, but haven't yet seen any in my price range, I would really like to stay under 500 bucks.

I am also wondering if anyone can tell me the difference between the bach fh600 and the bach fh200 flugelhorns. I am just curious as to why I see an fh600 for sale online at $510, but the least expensive fh200 I can find is $1280.

any input would be greatly appreciated,
Jon

Re: flugelhorn - barrington vs jean baptiste

Hello Jonyblaaze. I am starting a search myself for a Flugelhorn. I might be wrong, but these new Jean Baptist FLG 128's are not that well made, and may not play very well. Sam Ash does sell a Jean Baptiste 900S series Flugelhorn that is made by the B&S company in Germany. From Brass Review etc.,they are the same B&S Challenger 3145 Flugel sold under Jean Baptist name, at under half price. They can still be ordered from Sam Ash,but not sure of new retail price. A year or two back,Sam Ash marked them down, were a great buy like the recent buys on the Kanstul 800 series Besson Trumpets.I learn this info. a little two late, and missed out on a great buy on these J.B.900S Flugels.Even now they are a great buy compared to the B&S retail price. Have heard nothing but great reviews on them. The only other cheaper buy would be I believe,a Jupiter Flugel. Is I believe, a Yamaha clone, check out Brass review on those. Good luck on your search. May sell off some horns and wait for a sale to pop up on those Sam Ash 900s J.B. Flugels. One last remark on those 900S J.B Flugels. The ones made by the B&S company will have Jean Baptiste engraved on Bell and made in Germany etc. I may be very wrong about those J.B. 128 Flugels, there are some good reviews on Sam Ash. Try to contact the owners and see how they still like them. I would prefer the J.B. 128 Flugel over the Barrington flugel due to 128's smaller bore compared to the larger .460 bore of the Barrington. Most of the Pro Grade Flugels come in a small bore size. The intermediate and Student type Flugels are usually in the Larger .460 bore size. Flugels are a new thing to me,so am no expert on this matter. A family group with trumpet, guitar Flute,Oboe, clarinet and violin have joined my Church recently. A flugel should blend nicely with them.Take care

Re: flugelhorn - barrington vs jean baptiste

Hi guys,
I spent years playing a Bach Strad flugelhorn...it played like a trumpet, felt like a trumpet and sounded nearly like a trumpet even with deep V mouthpieces.
I then got a Jupiter flugelhorn which actually sounded like a flugelhorn...the intonation was pretty darn good. It diddn't have the greatest valves and they would stick frequently.
I then bought a used Vintage One flugel in silver. Wow..this horn would resonate in you hands..it can be played with nice sloting up to high G and has that distinctive flugel breathiness we look for..Highly recommend the Conn V1

If you're OK with a used horn look for older Yamaha flugels. They play really well and have a sturdy build. I bought one 20 years ago and it still plays great.

I think Dillon's is importing a flugel from the Far east that received some good reviews, but I haven't had the chance to play one...

Before I would buy cheap new, I would buy intermediate used. With either of the brands that you listed you can get lucky - or lose.

Re: flugelhorn - barrington vs jean baptiste

I do not have a Jean Baptiste flugelhorn so I am unfamiliar with their quality but I do have a Jean Baptiste pocket trumpet that I bought because of the price. It has poor machineing of threads on the valve casings and caps. The valve plating is abverage at best. It is not gig sturdy, if that makes sense. That is the bad news. The good news is that it plays better than I would have thought for the price. I am keeping it as a novelty for light use. If I were going to buy a flueglehorn I would try to find a vintage horn for a little more than the Jean Baptiste. I think you would be more pleased with the vintage horn.

Find a used Getzen. I played a Capri for years- good sound and great quality! I had to try a lot of pro model flugels before I found one that was better, and also had to spend a whole lot more. You should be able to find one used in the $400 range.
