Flugelhorn decision

I have been looking throughout the internet about flugelhorns. I'm pretty sure that I would like to purchase the kanstul 1525. There are three on ebay that I have been looking at. My first choice is up for $2450, this includes the case, two harrelson mouthpieces, custom heavy valve cap kit, custom engraving and mute, it is also one year old. The other I am seriously considering is for $1750. In the listing is a sound bite to hear this horn played. It is what made me decide on the kanstul. Yet it has no case or mouthpieces, I would be the third owner. The other choice is to buy a new kanstul. I have about a $2500 budget in mind. I would be grateful for any advice. Thank you.

Re: Flugelhorn decision

The Kanstul you're talking about with a sound clip is mine. Feel free to email me at my website for more information.

I love the horn and think it's fantastic. BTW the reserve price is lower than the buy-it-now price.

Cheers,
Trent

Re: Flugelhorn decision

jefan,

Considering there is only a $700 difference between horn 1 and horn 2 the 1525 with the engraving (depending if it appeals to you and who did it) and the case, mouthpieces (if they work for you), heavy valve cap kit, and mute, that seems like a good deal. How old is the horn? Is horn 1 and horn 2 the same model? How do the valves work on both? Buying new horn has its advantages, too. But, you would not have all the accessories to "sweeten" the pot. You can trust Kanstul. If the ebay sellers are trustworthy, you could get a good deal. If you amortize the $700 difference over five years of ownership, that's only $140 a year...less for each year you keep it. I would have to believe that horns 1 and 2 are good buys and you have a soundbite on the second one, so you know how it sounds? That's a plus!

Best wishes,

Lloyd

Re: Flugelhorn decision

Regarding a new horn - check with Dillon's or Chuck Levin's for a quote on a new horn to have an idea what your best deal is. As for Trent's horn, you can certainly trust that it is what he says it is. He has an excellent reputation.
I have two 1525's right now and think they're outstanding horns.

Re: Flugelhorn decision

jefan,

At least you know Trent is "upfront guy" and the flugelhorn he if offering comes at a fair price. He won't be disappearing tomorrow. The more expensive horn offer has extras you may not need.

Best wishes,

Lloyd

Re: Flugelhorn decision

The only thing that is really keeping me from buying the fancy engraved one and something about the green shell valve caps for 2450. Is the comments you have given about Trent Austin. He actually wrote me, which I really appreciate. But if I bought his horn, I would still need a mouthpiece and case. Possibly two mouthpieces, since I have never played flugelhorn. And the price gets up when I think of that. All of you have been wonderful with your comments, especially Trent. I will probably decide by tomorrow morning. I think Trent's will be closed or pretty close by then. It is is gone, I only have one to choose from. But I know nothing about the seller. I just hope the horn looks like his pics. Thank you all for your help.

Re: Flugelhorn decision

This is a picture of the Flugelhorn I decided to buy. I'm very happy that Trent was able to sell his for what he wanted. I was really torn, but I needed the mouthpieces and case. My Getzen case is over thirty years old and it looks like it. I just hope I can play this horn, to live up to it's looks. Thanks for your advice and help.

That's a beautiful instrument. I think it's a win-win all around.
