| Flugelhorn Mouthpieces Has anyone ever used the Bach 1B on Flugel horn? Also what do people think of Curry Flugelhorn mouthpieces. I use a Bach 1 1/4C on trumpet. My Flugel is a Kanstul 1525 Thanks ! |

| Re: Flugelhorn Mouthpieces Haven't played a Bach 1B flugel, but played a Bach 6B flugel and several of Mark Curry's flugel pieces. The Bach's just didn't seem to have the same smokey sound as the Curry FL. I prefer the 600 series rims over the standard curry rim, so if you want a comparable size to the Bach, you should definately give the Curry 80FL a try. If you're looking for a little brighter sound, and more control in the upper register, go with the 80FLM (slightly shallower). Myself, I prefer the FL cup - It's dark, smokey, and smooth sounding. I also much prefer the rounder, narrower rim of the Curry. If you like the Bach rims, then go with Marks standard series 1FL or 1FLM - His standard rims are based on a NY bach. World of difference between the Bach sound and the Curry sound. Curry being much smoother and darker... |

| Re: Flugelhorn Mouthpieces Sounds like my exact setup... 1 1/4C on Bb, Kanstul 1525 Flugel... I just went mouthpiece shopping for my flugel yesterday... went to Dillons; 4 1/2 hours of trying mouthpieces is a good time. Of course, its always personal preference, but I tried out Warburton, Laskey, Stork, and some others. I ended up getting (well, ordering, they didnt have the exact size i wanted) a Warburton. I love warburton rims, they're comfortable to me. I didnt get to try curry flugelhorn pieces, but if they're as comfortable and play as well as their trumpet counterparts, id say its probably a good thing to try out. Of course, try try try before you buy; whats good for me may not be good for you. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Flugelhorn Mouthpieces The Bach 1 rim is different than the 1 1/4 rim. I don't see any V-cup for that size on the Bach website. The V-cup is an absolute must for a flugel as far as I am concerned. The bowl shaped cups don't bring the best out of a flugelhorn. So you will have to experiment a bit! I don't recommend mouthpieces as all brands are good for somebody. I played a 1 1/4 for a short while, ended up switching to a Bach 1, then Schilke 18 and then Monette B2. I use the B2FL with my Getzen 4 Valve flugel and am very happy with it. |

| Re: Flugelhorn Mouthpieces My flugel mouthpiece experience is rather limited, which is a good thing. My first mouthpiece was a Bach 5BFL, and I didn't really care for it after playing it for a year or two. I traded it to a friend for an old Callet SOLO piece. It has more of a V cup and has a very nice sound and easy range. I've played it for 10 or 12 years now and have no desire to look around for something else. I agree with rowuk - don't use a trumpet-style cup on flugel. You won't get the proper sound. |

| Re: Flugelhorn Mouthpieces I really like the Curry flugel pieces. I play a Bach 3 C on trumpet and a Curry 3FL. It is a good traditional deep V shaped cup and has a great sound and feel. As you play a Bach rim I would recommend the standard Curry rim; it is actually based on the Mt. Vernon rims, not the NY rims. The Curry's are good value too. If you want a slightly more focussed and less volume to the sound with more ease in the upper register, as the 1525 is a large copper bell already producing a big deep rich sound, try the FLM. I am not sure which you would prefer. Best regards, Graham |

| Re: Flugelhorn Mouthpieces I have had good luck with the Dennis Wick flugel mouthpieces. Regardless.... pay attention to the taper issue. Get educated.... it's really a mess... and you'll blow money if you don't understand it going in. This is from the Kanstul site... Guide to Flugelhorn Tapers Confused about tapers? We used to be, too! Here's the scoop on flugelhorn mouthpiece tapers. If you are experiencing poor intonation and response, you may be using the wrong taper. LARGE Morse taper Commonly known as Standard Taper, the LARGE Morse taper is used by Yamaha, Getzen, Callet, Benge/King/Conn, Holton and older Kanstul 1525 fluglehorns. SMALL Morse taper The so-called “Bach Taper.” Bach, Courtois, newer Couesnon, Kanstul 1525 and some European flugelhorns use SMALL Morse taper. FRENCH (straight) taper Also known as Couesnon Taper, French taper is used by the original Couesnon, Flip Oakes "Wild Thing," Kanstul CCF 925, and original F. Besson flugelhorns. |

| Re: Flugelhorn Mouthpieces Quote:
I am very happy with the 3FL - nice traditional flugel sound. I tried GR's (I play either GR or Curry pieces with my trumpets) but with the flugel pieces I had a hard time finding a match. The Curry is a nice no-hassle off-the-shelf flugel piece that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Do make sure that you order the correct taper! If you play a 1-1/4C on trumpet then you should find the Curry 1.25FL to be pretty close. | |
