Flugelhorn Selection I'm about to buy a new flugelhorn and would like all you experts to vote for what you consider to be the very best on the market. I want a really true flugel sound with great balance, innotation, easy of blow (particually in the highter registers) and generally great quality. I am open for comment in all makes, finishes, and types (including 3 vs. 4 valve) etc. Let's leave price out as I am prepared to pay for what I get. Also if you can give a few reasons for your choice and/or experience with the chosen horn. Thanks

Re: Flugelhorn Selection Get a 3-valve with a trigger on the 3d slide. My Vintage One is fantastic. I also like the Yamaha 731 and the Kanstul Custom Class. There are many good choices. Flugels are very sensitive to mpc selection, so spend a little time on that after you buy your horn. Dave

Re: Flugelhorn Selection I have also been looking for flugelhorns recently, and have talked to many professionals in the business. They have all pretty much agreed on the following choices. the Scodwell flugel would be the top-of-the-line instrument in this category. More information can be found at http://www.washingtonmusic.com/scodwell.asp This however is one of the more expensive instruments. So, for the common man, at the everyday prices, it has been suggested by many to get (and this is a personal favorite) the Kanstul Signature Series... the current model is the ZKF 1525. Specs can be found on Kanstul's webpage in their online showroom. It's one sweet ride, I must say. ![]()

Re: Flugelhorn Selection The Kanstul 1525 is VERY dark sounding, almost "trombony". Many people like that and that's a valid choice, but those seeking a more traditional, light, smoky tone will be dissapointed. In the Kanstul line, I much prefer the Custom Class flugel. Dave
