Fuzzy cornets?

I have heard recordings of cornets that sound very mellow and fuzzy... like a flugel. I have a Yamaha 9E mpc that sounds how I like it in my Good ol' Coprion Director, but I can't get the same tone on my Olds Ambassador (for just $50, I had to try one!).

I can only afford a few hundred $ right now... looking for something comparable to the Coprion Director tone, but maybe a step up at least. Any suggestions of horn models/years to look for would be most appreciated.

Re: Fuzzy cornets?

I think a real cornet has a clear not fuzzy sound. It also can have considerable "bite" if pushed hard. That is what makes it so suitable for soloists - an incredible palette of colors.

The Ambassador was/is a student model, built to last - not coax the last 5% out of the sound. You will probably need to look for a more professional instrument to get a big difference in tone color. Many years ago I played a Besson Stratford cornet that was very "smooth", "buttery" in tone. If you get a dark sound out of the Coprion, why try to duplicate that with another horn. Buy something with a completely different, complementary sonic stamp. Then you have much more choice AND something suitable for many different playing opportunities!

Re: Fuzzy cornets?

Some of that sound is technique while other parts are the mouthpiece and how it relates to you. Might need a old school deep "V" cup shape piece to help you get there. Yammie E cup while deep is still a Bowl shape which has some inherent brightness. I can easily get very bright on my 20D2d while my 43.5B/692s is harder to get very bright and is by default much warmer in tone.

Still yet another part of the equation is the horn.

Hmmm... thanks for the input, but I guess what I am trying to ask is:

What cornets, that have better intonation and maybe looser slotting than a Director, have an inherently mellow/dark/flugely sound to them?

English cornets like Smith/Watkins, Besson and my absolute favorite, the Taylor medium bore cornet - this is the sexiest sounding instrument that I have ever played, so voluptuous and silky!
