CDF will become famous soon enough
G Trumpets

Hey Guys,

Is anyone familiar with the G Trumpets out there? Are they a good alternative to the picc? What would you think the advantages/disadvantages of using one are? The transposition from picc parts or C parts is very straightforward. Is the tone closer to that of the picc or C? Do they feel more like a picc or C, or Eb?

Re: G Trumpets

If we consider the C trumpet to be a mezzo-soprano instrument, the G trumpet is considered a soprano instrument, and thus in the piccolo class. Some, like the Schilke, try to emulate the mezzo-soprano instruments in breadth of sound. Others, like the Selmer are basically a Bb piccolo down a minor third. They are at their best playing baroque parts in C, and when playing something like the second trumpet part of the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets it is waaay easier to finger than a piccolo in A.

Most pros have an A/Bb piccolo, A C,Bb. Bb cornet and flugelhorn, maybe a D/Eb. A G or F/G is lower on the wish list than any of those.

Until you dial in, they just plain feel weird.

Re: G Trumpets

Kanstul has a model 1520 (I think) that plays
in G/A/Bb. It comes with 3 bells + 3 sets of
slides and it has a good reputation . . .

Re: G Trumpets

Some brands ( such like Schilke, Stomvi..and may be Kanstul as well ) offer a so called "chamber music bell" for the G-trumpet for playing orchestral works with a bigger sound than you can get on the picc. This kind of sound is required e.g. in Stravinskys "Pulcinella suite" ...where the G-trumpet fits very well.....

Johntpt is on a distinguished road
Re: G Trumpets

G trumpets are a fun addition to your aresenal! Lots of pieces work well on the G, from Cantata 51 to Pulcinella. Mine is a Schilke 4 valve, which I had built with the 3 G bell sizes, F bell and slides, and the E natural bell for the Hummel. Great horn and useful, even if I only use it 3-4 times a years. This week I'm using it for Rite of Spring, switching to picc for the high passages.

Yamaha also makes a good G, but doesn't have all the bell options of the Schilke. Selmer's G's were popular for years but are now hard to find. I've tried that Kanstul picc in G-A-Bb but didn't care much for it. The G side was pretty out of tune.

Re: G Trumpets

I have a Yamaha F/G that I use quite a bit in church work and quintet. For church, I can play the F with a chorus and not overpower them. It's a bit lighter in sound mass than a Bflat. I like using it in a brass quintet to add a different color to contrapuntal works such as Bach fugues or Gabrielli Canzones.
