Geneva Trumpet Review request

Can anyone give a review of any of those: Geneva Professional Trumpets

I have never heard of them before but they advertise themselves as "second to none"...

Re: Geneva Trumpet Review request

Made the mistake of ordering one a while back(about $1800). To make a long story short....
Upon receiving the horn I could not believe how terrible the finish was. The slides were not even fit and there was sodder all over the horn. I played the horn for about 1 week when the valves just died on me. When I took it to my repairman he made the interesting observation that this horn was the same horn Sam Ash sold as the Jean Baptiste model for $249.50.....Yep, all the parts fit each other perfectly! The repairman was even able to tell me which factory in China this trumpet came from. The Jean Baptiste model was actually better because the valves are monel instead of the junk Geneva uses.
Don't walk....run away from this outfit.

He sells his horns without a trial period, but if the horn is as terrible as the one I got you can at times get assistance from your credit card company like I did. Thank God for credit card protection!

Just remember the word "custom" can sometimes be as dangerous as "fat free".

Thats odd...He uses lawler leadpipes, bells and bracings. They are actually called geneva trumpets because roy lawlers shop is (was) in geneva, florida. There is a small discussion of them on "brass-forum.co.uk" Also on the geneva site it says that he uses monel valves. I have never seen or played one so im just letting you know what I know.

Are you all talking about the same horns?

The website says Handmade in England.

Re: Geneva Trumpet Review request

A repair shop I know of told me a while back that sometimes these horns come in requiring repair and rebuilding work that no nrew horn should need. I was in the market for a new trumpet then and that info plus the physical evidence put me off somewhat.

Re: Geneva Trumpet Review request

The horn I had definately had no Lawler parts. The repair tech who made the "Chinese" connection to this horn worked as an apprentice with Roy Lawler for a couple of years so he would have known if it had any Lawler parts.

Re: Geneva Trumpet Review request

Well, the web site shows at least 4 people that have horns in their hands, 2 of which helped design them. Time will tell if they are worth anything, but again PLAY before you PAY!!!!!!!

Re: Geneva Trumpet Review request

Hi there!

I am a proud owner of 2 Geneva Balanced Bb Trumpets and am very pleased with them - they are similar to the Olds Recording and old Selmer Balanced - played by Louis and Harry James.
with the valve block nearer the bell. They are dynamic and capable instruments! One is Silver Plate, the other Gold Plate. My Trumpet teachers, who play a Schilke B42, Strad 37 and Benge respectively have all had a go and are more than impressed with the sound and build quality, and happy to give it a thumbs up.

The owner of Geneva trumpets - Tim Oldroyd - seems to have a variable reputation, and Geneva could do with a management overhaul IMHO but I am very impressed with the quality of what I own.

Kind regards
PB
