Hello Forum, I am getting back into playing cornet/trumpet for my enjoyment, after so many years.. I have looked at some photos of a York cornet in very nice condition and considering driving to take a look and trying it out. Doing some web research, it looks to be from the current German York instrument maker, as the Style on the York lettering engraved on the bell is similar to that shown on the German York website. This cornet is a short model but has no shepard's crook, those cornets on the website are all shepard crook models, so this must be older model. I find very little mentioned on the web concerning their instruments, but by price one would think they pro level horns. I find alot of information on the US vintage York. Well, I'm not pro level, so...

Are they good horns / cornets? Anybody know much about them? Thanks for any responses. Stan

There was another thread on York Eminence cornets in the UK that Black Dyke plays and the consensus over there was that they were fine cornets

I do not know that much about the new York company, but remember that it has only existed for a few years. I really doubt that they have made a straight bell tail cornet during this time.

Some entry level York instruments show up on ebay sometimes. Those have a similar name logo. They look chinese. I guess they were made for Boosey & Hawkes as their bottom entry level line?

I think that is an interesting supposition KRax. I have seen those also and wondered about their pedigree in relation to the German Yorks models. I'm not sure that B & H has anything to do with instruments now. All I can find on line at their home site is about music publishing. I found a section of FAQ's , one of which answered an question on getting info on their musical instruments, the answer was "Following the sale of Boosey & Hawkes Musical Instruments in 2003, Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishers, Inc no longer holds any records on the old instrument manufacture business, and is unable to offer any advice about the instrument history, maintenance, repair or evaluation"

No more details there. Who bought them? Where are records, etc?
Good fodder for more investigation, I guess.

I thank you all for the responses. I did go look at the "york" cornet, it was made in Tiawan. Metalic sticker.

If you get to test the real deal from York Brass in Germany...but they all have a sheperd's crook. Rather expensive, but very well built and quite nice, a bit dark sound. Really nice. I got to try couple of them at the recent Schagerl Brass Festival in Mank. The valves are excellent, the sound is really what a cornet should sound like, intonation is excellent as well, easy and fun to play. It is less fun to pay though
