Getzen 300 vs Olds Ambassador?

I like the Olds sound a lot - starting to play again just for fun, with my 12 yr old (first year trumpet player), and looking at several offerings on Ebay.

This is a subjective question I know - but how would you compare say, the Olds and a Getzen 300?

Also thinking that I might want a cornet for the sound. Would it make for nice duet with a trumpet?

Thanks!

Unrelated: I started in the 4'th grade. They don't start here until 6'th grade... What a shame it seems to me.

Bill, glad you are getting into it with your son. I have a 73 Olds Ambassador cornet and would recommend one highly. Big , dark sound in comparison with my Roth, which is "sweeter" and the Holton, which is somewhere in between. I has a bigger "wrap" than the others and built like a tank, with good valves. Would be a nice contrast between a trumpet in duets. You both would sound somewhat different anyway.

Back when I started in the mid 50's, there wasn't any program in the elementary except violin. 7th grade was the start of organized bands.

Re: Getzen 300 vs Olds Ambassador?

I am tending towards the Olds. I do not know how a Getzen compares to his Yamaha, but I need to take him 'round to various stores.

I think its good to be playing together.... I think that having either instrument to switch with will add to the fun, and I think they will sound good together. Now - we as players - that'l take some work, but we enjoy it! What better way to get him to practice?

I'm gonna post a question about repairs in a new thread.

Thanks,
Bill

Re: Getzen 300 vs Olds Ambassador?

In my opinion,( I have one or more of each ), the difference is a wash. The Olds ambassador will usually be priced a bit lower, whereas, the Getzen 300 series is just as tough, has valves that are also superb, and the horn is not only in tune with itself, but, like the Olds sounds great with the right mouthpiece. My advice would be a California made or Cleveland made Reynolds. On Ebay they cost less than either the Olds or Getzen and in my opinion, are better than either.

Re: Getzen 300 vs Olds Ambassador?

Oldlou,
Thanks. Yes - the comparison in this case is trumpet-trumpet, but I want to pick up an old cornet too. Probably can't go wrong with either one.

Thanks!
