Re: Getzen 590S Capri questions

I really like the advice of taking a field trip with some other students and getting them involved. After all, 100 miles isn't that far really. Often music stores will meet / match the deals of the web stores, especially if it is dependent on making the sale--never hurts to ask them.

Good observation about the prices going up--that's progress. I had a 590--bought it new for $250 (those were the days). The only issue I had with the horn was sometimes the linkage for the trigger would start vibrating--sounded like a snare drum was close by.

Good hunting!

Re: Getzen 590S Capri questions

If you buy the Getzen go with the 1st valve saddle, later on when you move up to a pro horn most of them don't come with a trigger, so your son won't have to go through a transition period of getting used to holding the trumpet in his left hand, besides Getzen valves are among the best in the business.

Re: Getzen 590S Capri questions

Thanks to everyone for your contributions. They have been very helpful. After another day of web browsing and more discussions with my son and our friend the college band director we narrowed the choices to the King 2055, the Getzen 590 and the Yamaha 4335. My son, my wife and I basically held a business meeting, taking everything we could find about the three choices into account. After discussing each horn's perceived pluses and minuses, we asked my son to make the decision. He chose the Getzen with 1st valve saddle. The deciding factor was all the high praise for the valves.

The best price we found was at Sam Ash, plus my wife found a discount code good for $85 off the price, so we paid less than $1K for the trumpet and case with 2nd day shipping. It should be here afew days before he returns from church camp next Saturday. Then he'll take it to band camp the next week.

I can't wait to hear him play it and see how his playing progresses over the next few years. He is very excited about it and I'm sure he will continue to work hard to become a better player.

Re: Getzen 590S Capri questions

Quick update. The trumpet arrived last week and my son is playing it now at symphonic band camp. He loves the Getzen, especially the valves which according too him, "rock".
He sounded pretty good playing the few scales and such I heard him play. I'll get to hear him at the camp concert Thursday night.

Outstanding! What's also great about receiving a brand-new horn? All the excitement and increased motivation to practice and play. Good job, Michael's Dad! I'll bet you really start seeing significant progress in your son's playing!

MichaelsDad,

If you buy me a new Getzen trumpet, I'm adoptable!

You made a good choice for you son. Getzen valves are very smooth and last and last.

Best wishes,

Lloyd
