![]() ![]() | Getzen eterna with bach 37 bell I found this on Craigs list. Why would you put a Bach 37 bell on a Severensen Eterna? Is the 37 bell lighter than the original Getzen Bell? The price is $375.00 "This is a Getzen Eterna "Severinson" Bb Trumpet. According to Getzen, this horn was manufactured around 1977 or 1978. I bought it from a college buddy in 1983. I had it customized at Band Instrument Service Co in 1984 or 1985. The original bell was replaced with a Bach #37 bell. I also added a Bach third valve catch stem." Any opinions?

![]() | Re: Getzen eterna with bach 37 bell Perhaps he liked the all-around 37 bell instead of the original specialized bell. (I'm assuming the horn was made for jazz playing. The bell looks a lot broader, even more so than the Bach 43)

![]() | Re: Getzen eterna with bach 37 bell I found this post by Tony Scodwell on TH: ........"Yeah, Tony had to chime in [I'm flattered that you remember...] Well, Doc and Getzen got along just fine. The owner in those days was a fellow by the name of Harold Knowlton, a major league drinker. Doc was AA and really had to bite his tongue around Harold, and not so much because of the booze, Harold wouldn't spend the dough to invest in one piece bells. Kiefer in Elkhart, IN. was making their bells then, a two piece Bach 37 copy. Doc wanted Harold to make bells like Bach [one piece] and always played a Getzen with a Bach 37 bell with the Bach engraving strapped off and Getzen rolled on because Harold wouldn't spend the money to start his own bell making in house. Getzen valves were wonderful [and are now] and I marveled at the nice ladies who would lap them in with a great deal of care. Doc and I spent many hours at the plant playing through a bunch of horns. They were quite consistent, and Doc might take a few out on tour to blow. I really don't think he would blow into a town and pick up a horn in a local store to play that night. Maybe proving a point during the day to show the store owner that they ALL played good, but when push came to shove, he wanted that Bach bell on his horn. [can I still get that $10K???] And never forget that Harry played everything from his heart, not his brain. Tony Scodwell Scodwell USA Trumpets and Flugelhorns "............ Garry |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Getzen eterna with bach 37 bell Ah, if it would only be that easy. I am sure more was done to the horn than just switching out the bell. The braces have to be relocated, maybe even changed to more massive ones and I would not be surprised if some modification was needed on the leadpipe. The proof is in the pudding STCH. Give the horn a blow and let us know what you think. The valves are better than Bach for sure. I am not sure about the rest.

![]() ![]() | Re: Getzen eterna with bach 37 bell The owner told me the Bach bell was put on the horn because of an accident that bent the original bell pretty badly. He said the only bell available at the repair shop was a Bach 37. That is the only reason it has a Bach Bell. There are a few dents that I will have to look at. For the price I think I can get it and have a Getzen bell installed without too much hurt. I wouldn't be surprised if Getzen refuses to refurbish the horn with a Bach bell on it. I am starting to be suspicious of my large bore Bach having some tuning problems. I think the horn needs a higher level player to get it in tune than I am capable of. I am thinking a ML bore is going to help me get in tune better. It may be a harder blow but I am willing to do that if I can narrow my pitch problems.

![]() ![]() | Re: Getzen eterna with bach 37 bell The horn played ok. I could get some air through it. However, it was in pretty tough shape. The owner had peened the second valve tuning slide to improve intonation. I couldn't pull the slide. If anyone would care to comment on peening the second valve slide to improve intonation please do. Otherwise, we are finished with this thread.
