shopgoodwill.com - #4020315 - Super Deluxe Copper Accented Getzen Trumpet - 9/22/2008 1:30:37 PM

Does anyone have any info on these horns? Don't really know if it was a good deal or not. I figured I couldnt lose too much on it. I have searched the forums and googled it, but havent really found much info on them.

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe - Bought on Shopgoodwill.com

Max,

At $200, I really don't think you could go too far wrong. In researching this model, owners rave about the valves, so the critical factor on this horn--just as on pretty much any sight-unseen horn purchase--will be to see what kind of shape they're in on yours and how much pop they have left. Owners caution about the lightness of the bells on these horns, and yours appears to have picked up a crease along the way, but it should come out with the efforts of any competent tech. Also, it appears that the receiver might be slightly bent downward; this could be a result of an accident or an intentional modification for an upstream player, but, inasmuch as the aft brace was intact, it should be capable of being straightened easily enough. Otherwise, the horn you won looks to be in great shape for its age, and the lacquer looks far better than most. I think this model horn was Getzen's response to the F. E. Olds Super Recording: they copied the famous Olds tone ring, even using a similar script inscription for the similar-sounding model name. And the contrasting copper, nickel, and brass components really says--or screams--"1950s." Let us know how she plays. They have a reputation for playing very bright, but those who like them say that proper mouthpiece selection can adjust the tone in any direction they choose. Good luck, and post some pics when you've got it cleaned up.

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe - Bought on Shopgoodwill.com

We picked up a Getzen Super Deluxe for our son about four years ago at a local second hand music store, and paid about that much as I recall. He LOVES it, though a music teacher once told us to make a lamp out of it! As I recall it has a small bore, which apparently some do not like. I think I recall the teacher commented that it can be hard to blow, but I think Erik said it helps play higher notes. Erik, loves his, and perhaps half for playability and half for the cool look of the 50's tri-color metals. Enjoy!

Re: Getzen Super Deluxe - Bought on Shopgoodwill.com

Hi, I was following that auction too. Hope you like it. There are numerous threads archived here on TM you can search on that instrument, some recent. I just played one for awhile owned by OLDLOU. We get together periodically to compare note and blow each other's acquisitions. It is a fine playing horn, but special care has to be taken with the bell, as the metal is paper thin and will crumple with light blows. It blows with a bright, trumpet tone. Recommend you be very careful setting it on a stand and keep it in a case where it can be secured so it doesn't move during transit.Forum: trumpetherald.com Here is a link that may be of interest from TH. Also, go to Horn-u-copia and check out their info on Getzen's. Dave
