Just heard back from Brett on my plating problem. My horn was suppose to be sent off this week but there appears to be another delay. Oh well, "stuff" happens, as they say. I do appreciate their updated communication with me and know my situation will have a happy ending some day. Here is the latest concerning if they were ready for me to send in my horn:

"Dan,

Unfortunately, we are not. The tank was all set up and ready to go when we had our plating supplier come in to create the plating bath for us. They got everything but the gold into the tank and the in tank heater failed. There was a manufacturing defect that cause the heater to burn the bath. Luckily for us we hadn't added the gold yet or we could have lost $30,000+ worth of gold. As it stands we only lost about $400 worth of chemicals and conductive salts. The manufacturer is building us a new heater that we are expecting within the next week or so. I'm sorry to say that now it looks like we may be held off until the first of the year.

I apologize for the delay. Things just happened to go wrong at all the right times to really mess up our installation of the system. I will keep you posted.

Brett Getzen"

I've had the same experience with my students. I feel so bad for the ones who get Bach and Yamaha student models, the Getzens are far superior in almost every way.

Re: Gold Finish on Getzen Genesis

So glad I found this thread! My 16-year-old's Genesis had been at Getzen awaiting repair and gold replating since the beginning of October. Now I know exactly what's happening, which is some peace of mind.

Hope he gets it back before regional honor band tryouts in mid-January!

Ok, I know it has been awhile since any news was heard on the gold front. Believe me, this has been more than frustrating with all of things that went wrong. Murphy's Law right? Anyway, they mixed up the gold bath today. By next week we will have run some test horns and a plating coupon so we can dial in the amount of time needed to put the right amount of gold on the horn to ensure both durability and luster. Fingers crossed we can then get into these warranties as well as new horn production.

I just want to extend an enormous thank you to everyone that has had to put up with all of this. Not only the delays, but the fact that you need the repair in the first place. I honestly and truly appreciate your patience. I don't know if I would be so understanding.

Just don't use my horn as the "test" case... Take the time and do it right... Hire some Bach guys to help out.

Re: Gold Finish on Getzen Genesis

Don't worry about that. The testing won't be done on anyone else's horn. And why would I hire guys that don't do their own plating to do our's?

Re: Gold Finish on Getzen Genesis

The first horn was plated Monday afternoon. It came out looking pretty good. However, I didn't think the color of the gold was quite rich enough. The planting company rep was in yesterday and we talked about possible fixes. He said the easiest thing to do would be to drop the plating temp about ten degrees. It will take longer to plate the horn, but the color should be richer. We're going to try one like that and see what we get.
