Is this a good idea?

Hi, I've been looking for a Bach C Trumpet. I posted an ad on craigslist and a man called with an offer. He has has a Bach (Bill Tottle customization) with three bells: a 229, 228 and 238. He also says that he has several tuning slides and leadpipes, including the 25H that I want. It comes with (I believe) several Tottle 3CStar mouthpieces. Unfortunately, it's medium large-bore, and I'd rather have a large bore. He wants $1800. That's way more than I want to pay, but I'm wondering if I could sell two of the bells, leadpipes, tuning slides and mouthpieces that maybe I don't need and return my investment. Does anyone know what this trumpet might be worth (assuming it's in good/great condition). Thanks a bunch for the responses.

Re: Is this a good idea?

Let me get this right. Your wanting to know if you should pay more than you want for a horn that you don't really want?

IMHO wait for the large bore if that's what you want. I cannot answer your question as far as value, but I'm afraid if you settle for this you'll regret not holding out for the LB.

Hopefully someone else can chime in as to the value.

Good Luck,

Dave

Uhh, a Tottle should go for way, way more than $1800! The Bach ML and LB had the same size bore through the valve block, and if you can buy up the horn for the above price you can always try a LB tuning slide. Go for it!

Bore size isn't the be all end all in trumpet sound. Maybe you will like it more than you think. I bet most people couldn't even tell in a blindfold test which is large medium and small bore.

Re: Is this a good idea?

I am not sure how easy it would be to sell the bells for real money. They have been modified to work with the Tottle system.
Why is this guy selling?
Tottle solved many of the intonation issues that you will almost for sure have with a stock 25H.
