![]() | Graduating senior looking for advice on upgrading I'm a graduating high school senior heading to a university, I'm looking for some advice on purchasing a professional level trumpet. I play mostly jazz but I want an all around performing instrument. What should I be looking for to get a really quality instrument for the price? What brands should I be looking into? Thanks! |

| Fortissimo User | Re: Graduating senior looking for advice on upgrading Look into the Yamaha line, they have some really nice trumpets. The LA Model is fairly cheap (just under 2000) and is well worth it in my opinion. Also, look at Bach Strads, I don't like them, but it may work for you. Then there is Getzen, Shilke, Kanstul, NYTC, and many more options out there. Industry standard seems to be a toss up of the Yamaha and the Bach. Most importantly (especially with Bach horns) PLAY BEFORE YOU PAY. Only buy a horn that you have actually gotten to try, you may have 2 of the exact same horns side by side and one plays great and the other should be a ship anchor.

![]() | Re: Graduating senior looking for advice on upgrading If you look around there are a couple of similar threads suggesting various brands, but the main thing (and the most important) is to play it, have someone else (or several someone elses) play - like teachers, friends, etc. before you have to keep it. If there aren't music stores nearby, some online places (like wwbw.com) have trial periods so all you have to do is pay for shipping if you don't like the horn

Once you've established how much you can afford to spend, then we can help and suggest. Otherwise, just buy the best trumpet on the surface of the earth. Or find a deal.

![]() ![]() | Re: Graduating senior looking for advice on upgrading The top of the line Bach Strads are made in America. Use the web site to determine what bell you want and lead pipe, and bore. Three parameters, bell, lead pipe, bore. Now play test the horn and go from there.

![]() | Re: Graduating senior looking for advice on upgrading the Bach Strad ML bore standard leadpipe and a 37 bell is usually the standard but it usually depends on what kind of sound you're looking for. With Bach consistency is the big issue. you can have 10 horns with the same specs in the room, try all 10 but come away with 10 different sounds. Yamaha's are very consistent across the board. But like some one else said, for under 2 grand you can't beat the sound of a Schilke ... I like the s32's the best out of the schilke line up but that's just me...
