Help Me ... I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up ...

Now that I have your undivided attention ... I am the very proud owner of a vintage Wayne Bergeron Model #1600 Kanstul Trumpet (brushed laquer finish). For whatever Twilight Zone reason ... both spit valves have just stopped reliquishing any spit ???? I have to pull my slides out to dump the gargle. I do not see any damage etc. They Are Amato Spit Valves ... any suggestions?

I solved my too dark up high problem by pulling my Marcinkiewicz E-14 out of the closet. Plenty of piercing brightness with that piece versus my usual monette LT piece. It was me ... NOT the horn as several suggested. GLOREYYYYYY ......

Re: Help Me ... I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up ...

I read here somewhere that those things are problematic so i avoid buying horns with them. I don't remember where I read the post but it seems the person posting replaced them because he had his shop guy clean them out a few times so that leads me to believe they are fixable at least. They just plug up from time to time. If I stumble onto the post I will let you know. Maybe a search of amato? Oh, and congrats on the horn, you have my envy! LOL!

Have you tried cleaning them out? Remove the "innards" and poke something through the hole in the middle. If they worked well once and stopped working on you then the odds are greatly in favour that "something" (peanut butter chip? chunk of lettuce? science experiment?) has clogged the openings. If they have ALWAYS been a problem then I'd suggest that there is a burr of metal inside the tubing where the hole was drilled through. You can fix that by getting a sharp (NEW) drill bit that is very VERY slightly larger than the hole and carefully and slowly drilling through to remove the burr. Worked for me on a Jupiter flugel.

Also... Amados work VERY much more reliably if you give them a drop of oil every few days or once a week and work them a bit. I've got Amados on three horns and not one of them has ever plugged or "frozen" on me.

Alex Yates has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Re: Help Me ... I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up ...

Believe it or not, you could be blowing too hard when emptying the water from you horn. You should use a warm airstream and let the water fall out. Sometimes, when blowing the water out, you can blow it past the opening and it therefore remains in the instrument. Just my measly 2 cents.

Re: Help Me ... I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up ...

Ditto with what Alex said. Also check to make sure there's no "crud" blocking the whole and that the hole has actually been drilled. I have a friend who got a horn from a big name company that shall remain nameless but they forgot to drill the hole for the amado key on the instrument.

DOH!

It's probably all the Taffy I eat when I play ... or maybe the Texas Double Whopper ... or maybe the peanut butter ... thanks for lending me a hand and helping me back up.

Re: Help Me ... I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up ...

The amato spit "valve" is better because it is flush with the metal and has less disturbance of the air flow. The normal spit keys have that piece soldered onto the bow where crud can collect in addition to the disturbance.
Unfortunately, I have seen MANY installations with the burr on the inside - just sloppy manufacturing.
I ditto Tootsalls post!
