Help with a Schilke

I am offered a Schilke. The seller doesn't know anything about the trumpet, not even the model.

Its serial is 102xx, and I think it is one of the 1980s horns. Does anyone know more about this? I cannot find any info on any of the Schilke serial numbers page.

Also, if I am right, this thing's going to have Yamalloy valve problems, right?

Re: Help with a Schilke

The Yamalloy problem did not occur on all horns Schilke produced, To be honest, Schilke had the tightest tolerances in the industry BEFORE the Yamaha joint venture and I know personally of many cases of the valves hanging when the valve block was squeezed to hard. After a year or 2 of normal wear, no more problems.

Even the Yamalloy valves if properly cleaned and oiled are just fine.

Play before you pay. Even a Schilke could have been overhauled in a garage without proper tools!

here is a list of serial numbers:

The Schilke team is great. I am sure that you can contact them too.

Re: Help with a Schilke

According to the Schilke Loyalist The Schilke Loyalist,
your prospective instrument is not part of the Yamalloy issues.
Give Schilke a call and they will immediately know what model that serial number is and as Rowuk says, they will immediately help with any questions or problems with Schilke horns.

By the way....your model number will be on the leadpipe right at the mouthpiece reciever.

Re: Help with a Schilke

Any of the Yamaha/Schilkes have Yamaha valve casings. They do not look like a Schilke valve casing.

And they are very helpful and friendly. I called them not long ago and they were able to quickly tell me the month and year of production on my April 1977 X3

Re: Help with a Schilke

The Yamalloy-affected horns are in the serial-number range 20,000-29,999.

Re: Help with a Schilke

Thanks everyone.

I got my info from those great people from Schilke :)

My problem was that the current owner has absolutely no idea about trumpets...at all! I could not get him to read model number, even though I explained where he'd find it.

It's a B7. I'll go try it and buy it if I like it.

:)

Re: Help with a Schilke

Yet another question: what does "SLB" on its mouthpiece receiver stand for? Not "Schilke Large Bore", I suppose? It's a B7.
