Which horn do you like best? Vote here!

Following on a similar thread by ldwoods I was hoping to get a bit of feedback from the readers here. I was bored (and stuffed!) last night so I thought I'd record 5 horns and run a "blindfold test" to have the folks here help me sell a few trumpets.

I again find myself with a bunch of horns and should sell a few. One or two of the horns here is not for sale but the others are. Please vote above and add comments in the thread to explain the reasons for your choice. Sorry for the uninspired playing (it is an Aebersold after all!). I played everything on the same mpc and the settings/mic/placement are all the same.

test horn 1 - Putfile.com
test file 2 - Putfile.com
test file 3 - Putfile.com
test file 4 - Putfile.com
test file 5 - Putfile.com

After a few days I'll reveal the horns I used on which clips! Thanks for listening and voting! Best,

T

Re: Which horn do you like best? Vote here!

Hey Trent,

I liked 3 the best, it seemed to have the smoothest sound, to my ears.

5 was close, but 3 was best.

I also thought 4 was the weakest sounding.

Hi, Trent!
So the eternal horn safari continues........redundant, maybe, but appropriate in your case!
All right - my pick was #1. On horn #1, everything you played just seemed to fall into place - perfect tone, warm and fat, but sounded like you could sizzle a little if you pushed it. Intonation sounded great, and it didn't sound like you were struggling with anything. The last horn was a close second for the same reasons. The others sounded a bit too bright, and in the case of #2, a little nasal for the way you play. They also sounded a bit constrictive for you - like there might be a little too much back pressure.
I hope I helped you out a bit - I'm interested to know wchich horns these were!

Re: Which horn do you like best? Vote here!

#1 - a bit thin, started out less sure but gains as you go, have you played this horn much?
#2 - wonderful agility, must have slickest valves, confident on highs and bends, but maybe a little too open?
#3 - nice tone, but with a little less confidence.
#4 - highs harder to nail, overall less expressive.
#5 - confident playing, hits the slots but slides at will, wide range, you seem most at ease.

Overall, I'd choose #5. Seems like you took it places the others didn't want to go. #1 has a lot of potential if I'm right about the familiarity. In order from best to worst (or rather from wonderful to merely great): 5, 2, 3, 4, 1.

I'm probably miles off, but it was fun!

Thanks,
Garry

I like the first. Clear tone with just that amount of air in it, that I like.
But you anyway sound great on every trumpet.

Re: Which horn do you like best? Vote here!

Interesting comments so far. Thanks for the kind words. I know it's hard to pick out which one is better for your tastes. I got done last night and the results surprised me too. I also realize that I pretty much sound like me on everything. That might be a good thing but I was hoping I'd find the "Terence Blanchard and Dave Bilger" buttons on one of these instruments. bummer!

Keep the comments coming. This is fun!

FabULous !

If I ever become dedicated enough, YOU are the guy I'll be calling up for some improv lessons.

Re: Which horn do you like best? Vote here!

Beautiful playing on all 5 - a pleasure to hear! #1 seemed the "smallest" or thinnest to me, with #3 sounding the darkest, almost flugel-like. I think I preferred #3, but they all sounded great, proving once again that it's less the horn and more about who's on the business end of it! Good luck, Trent!

Best wishes,
Chas

Re: Which horn do you like best? Vote here!

I found that I was trying to rate the clips on my style at first. But listening to "your" style and the horns I thought #1 was capable but not exceptional. #2 seemed to be agile and clear. #3 seemed a little dark and muddy to me, it could have been some of the licks, no criticism on the playing just some licks seemed to be darker and not as good on intonation with more lipping. #4 seemed to have more missed notes on the high end and just sounded to tight., at first I thought maybe you were getting a little lip fatigue. Until I heard #5 which I really liked the tone and you nailed some of the harder licks better on this horn. #5 sounded like a more open horn and easier for you to play than the others. My favorite is #5 followed by #2.
