![]() | How offen should I drain the water key? ^_^ My Besson 609 always build up water fast. Every 3 or 5 minutes, I can drain several drops of water from the water key. I compared it with Getzen Eterna and the Eterna seems to produce less water. Is this normal? Just curious, Oldsben |

A cold horn will aid condensation and being overly hydrated makes me spit more. I empty regularly when I have some rests. It is better not to wait until the horn starts gurgling. Some horns seem to gurgle sooner. This is probably due to a pressure node being in an area where water can collect. My flugelhorn is like that. Don't worry, just empty.

![]() | Re: How offen should I drain the water key? ^_^ I play a Schilke B1 and it has just 1 spit valve. I empty the third valve slide when it needs it by removing it. However, I still have some spit hiding somewhere. I turn the horn (valves to the left and horizontal) and hold the third valve down and blow forcefully, then valves 2 and 3, blow and then hold all valves down, blow, point bell in the air, continue to hold all valves down and blow once more. Then slowly turn horn so spit will flow out the Bell. Ah, now thats better. I always like to see a little stream flow out even after I empty the spit the conventional way. A dirty horn will also hold more spit or at least keep it from flowing as freely and make it more difficult to empty it. I suspect some of this spit is laying in the valve tubing when the valves don't quite line up right with the tubing. I also like to remove the bottom valve covers and empty them as well (I don't do this during a gig, but I do do it about 20 min into a practice session) this gives me a little break. I also wipe these out once in a while. |
