Re: Hub van Laar Flugelhorns

I'm endorsing Hub van laar instruments so needless to say I'm very happy with my horns. Hub has 6 models:

B1 the one I'm playing now (see my YouTube vids)
B2 is like the B1, but has a goldbrass bell
B3 is has a bigger bell, so a broader sound and bigger feel.
B4 is a new model, very compact but has a nice dark/warm sound (it's on my wishlist)

Oiram a very nice flugelhorn, maybe more jazzy. Paolo Fresu is playing one.

Ack van Rooijen model. Ack is one of the best flugelhorn players around. I believe it's something like a mix of an Oiram and a B2

I don't know the price range in the U.S. In Europe prices start round € 2000,- for the B1-B4, the Oiram is 500,- more I think.

Bob Findley is the only dealer in the US. You can contact him through his website.

Re: Hub van Laar Flugelhorns

I have the Oiram flugelhorn and it is fantastic in every way...beautiful sound, best valves out IMHO (Bauerfeind),spot on intonation, well built.....it looks good and plays even better.

I found buying from Hub Van Laar a very positive experience......I have been on trumpet safaris and at the moment feel very settled but I would not rule out buying another trumpet. I will only buy another flugel if I lose/damage my Oiram...my new horn would be another Oiram!

Re: Hub van Laar Flugelhorns

Thanks Felix.....I have heard great things about your horns. If I lived closer to you I am sure I would have been in contact by now!

Still ....we have some good makers here in Europe and I really have to thank Erik Veldkamp who intially stirred my interest in Hub Van Laar and his horns. I don't know about the trumpets but this flugel is really nice.

Sorry to change the subject (some seem to just hate that!) but bringing up the excellent player Paolo Fresu, not very well known here in the States, compels me to mention my brother-in-law, the Italian bassist, composer and bandleader Giovanni Tommaso-- one who some might argue "discovered" Paolo. Just thought I'd throw that in, totally unbiased of course (ha!).
