Katrin
It is spelled Hüttl and was a very popular company in Germany from 1900. They built instruments of every class from student to pro. They were originally located in Graslitz in the Czech Republic. After the communists took over, he moved his operation to Germany near Nürnberg. Around 1970 he went bankrupt and moved to Canada. That is the last I heard of them

Horn-u-copia has some info on Huttl in Canada from posters who had knowledge. One said they closed the factory after only 2 yrs. You still see listing for horns on ebay once in a while. Just look up the Huttl thread on Horn-u-copia for better details. You also see Chris Kratt listings occaisionaly. He was described as distributor of Huttl instruments.

Well, Hüttl is a very rare brand, apparently. At the band, NO ONE has a Hüttl. Well, and neither do they have Bachs, really, but that's because they're expensive.

Well, thanks for the help! I'm convinced the Hüttl is a great trumpet -- even if this trumpet already has 70 something years.
You are welcome, good luck on you music studies. As long as the horn is in good shape and works for YOU it doesn't matter how old it is!

Re: Hütl

Katrin: I have actually owned about 3 or 4 of the various Huttl trumpets. and like anything German-made, they are good instruments. Additionally, they are somewhat of a collector's item...have fun w/your horn!

Re: Hütl

Hello All,

Huttl instruments were manufactured in New Brunswick in the 1970's as a government initiative to increase regional employment. Sabian was also set up under the same circumstances. Huttl, Canada made student line instruments that were the then equivalent of the Chinese made stuff of today. Ok, so what?
Well, back in the day of non free trade, to protect a fledgling Canadian instrument manufacturer, a 35% tariff was applied to all "imported" instruments. This included U.S. made horns that lived just over the border. The tariff also continued for many years after Huttl, Canada went into receivership.

As for your Huttl trumpet, don't trust the Made in Germany stamp. The parts came from there but may have been assembled in New Brunswick ... the Conn equivalent of Abilene. The bankruptcy was justified as the instruments were as the Germans so politely put it, "sheisse" I hope I spelled that correctly.

Cheers,

Brian
