Thumbs up I Won a Sonare Trumpet!

This summer I had the chance to attend ITG in NJ. I had a great time attending some fantastic performances and got the chance to try to play a bunch of nice horns. One afternoon I was in the vendor area and had just bought a mouthpiece at Dillon's. I was waiting on a friend when I spotted Sonare Trumpets. I picked up a Bb with my new mouthpiece and started blowing on it.

I was amazed. The trumpet looked like a Bach 37 to me. The fit and finish were awesome and it played with a nice even sound from top to bottom. I was very impressed. I think at that point I had heard of this company before but I wasn't very familiar with them. I noticed it had a Blackburn leadpipe and then Frank (Sonare rep) told me Jim Becker of Osmun Music was involved with this horn. When I lived just outside of Boston I had Jim work on my horns all the time. He is one of the best in the business. So with Blackburn and Jim Becker I knew there were some really good people involved in the development of the trumpet.

I entered the Sonare raffle to win a new Bb and never thought about it again. I have never won anything in my life. So you can imagine my surprise when I got a call from Frank months after ITG telling me I won the trumpet. Frank was a great guy to talk with at the conference and was very helpful over the phone. The new Sonare was here at my house in less then a week. This trumpet plays just as well as the ones I tried at ITG. I will recommend these horns to all of my students and colleagues.

I would like to thank Sonare trumpets for the new horn! They have been a pleasure to deal with and they have a great new trumpet on their hands! I would recommend a Sonare to anyone looking for a great trumpet at an excellent price!

Cool! Congrats!

So, how much do they cost?

Why do people not publish their prices? It's annoying.

That's great news MJ! Congrats! I'm a huge fan of the Sonare horns and think they are the best bang for your buck out there.

It's a really solid horn for sure.

Sonare Trumpets

A private student of mine just auditioned several horns over a few hours that we had shipped in for her to try. One of them was a Sonare Bb (silver plate)

It was a very well constructed horn and played quite well and was a little less than some of the others but with the sterling silver Blackburn leadpipe ended up being in the same range anyway.

It was very even in tone across registers and played well in tune with itself. Moderate resistance and had a very nice and quite "dark" sound. This point was actually why we ruled this particular instrument out first among the five different horns. It was actually too "dark" for general high school work (especially since she plays on the dark side herself.) The horn didn't project and carry quite as well as we would have liked.

Please don't get me wrong. I thought is was a great horn, just not a good match for her (or myself). For some it would be a fantastic instrument.

I was curious about the Sonare brand with the Cliff Blackburn connection so that is why I had it shipped in.

I'm sure there are other models with different playing characteristics that can match up with any type of player.

In my experience, Cliff would only become involved with a quality project such as this.

Congratulations on winning the horn. Enjoy!

Do you mean sterling slilver Bell? Why did you order that one to try? I have the "regular" Bb and I think it would work great for a high school student.
