ID this Flugel Hi all. This may not be the place for this question, but I could find no strictly Flugelhorn section so bear with me. I bought this flugelhorn at a yard sale/auction for $150 a few years back. It is clearly an older horn, and I did some research on it and found nothing. It is an Olds horn, obviously with "Olds" engraved on the bell. Also engraved on the bell is a word I can't read starting with an 'F' and 'Calif.'. Also on the end of the leadpipe is a small letter 'B'. The serial # is 700564. The bell seems to be gold/rose brass. Does anyone know what horn this is, an estimate to how old it is, and provide any information on it? The horn could use some aesthetic work on the finish and other fine details, but it is a fine player. Any info would be great. Here's some pictures:

Re: ID this Flugel That's an Olds flugel made in Fullerton, check the serial number and you can find out what year it was made. These are sought after horns, good buy!

Re: ID this Flugel Ok thanks for your quick replies. Is this horn worth investing in it to get it refurbished? Also a Schilke 14F mouthpiece came with it and I can't find anything on it either. I'm assuming it was a model discontinued some time ago. It's a nice piece. Proctor- What style/brand pieces fit your flugel the best? I was looking into a new mouthpiece but I'm not sure which taper fits the L-12. Thanks.

Re: ID this Flugel Small Morse taper (also called Bach taper) fits. Not sure which brands other than Bach use this taper. I'm using a Callet Solo FL mouthpiece on mine, but it was a large Morse taper (or standard taper) that I had turned down to fit.

Re: ID this Flugel The great Johnny Coles played this same model flugel......his was silver plated. Check him out on "The Prisoner" (1969/ Blue Note Records) by Herbie Hancock. Johnny played his Olds flugel exclusively on this date.

Re: ID this Flugel You're going to have to get a mouthpiece with a straight French taper. American style flugel pieces don't work with the receivers on these horns. The Olds are set up like Couesnon flugels.
