Info on Olds P-12 Custom

Hello gang.
I am looking for any info on the Olds P-12 Custom Bb.
I just got it from a friend of mine, and can't find any info.
What is it all about? Value? Any info would be appreciated.

Felix

One of the tuning bell jobs Felix?

We had one in the store back in the late '70's. No one bought it. They liked Bach and Benge better.

The one we had (now this is me trying to recollect 25 years ago) had valve buttons of metal (not pearl or fake pearl). Can't recollect the finish. Lacquer maybe.

The tuning bell screw was a little dinky and lightweight compared to Schilke's version. If I'm remembering that it was a tuning bell horn.

As to price back then, I think it was a little less than a Bach but can't swear to it. It must have been in the same ball park to not have sold.

Does it play a little "smaller?"

Re: Info on Olds P-12 Custom

Hi Felix,

The Custom was designed by Zig Kanstul and R Dale Olson in the mid 60's. The 'Custom' part of it was a kit that was sent to dealers with 3 bells and 5 leadpipes. You would try the various combinations until you found the one you wanted and it would be custom ordered for you. When you got the horn the combination as engraved on your bell, the one you see most often is 37117 not sure which is which. They were lightweight horns and played well.
1966 Olds Catalog This was the P-10 version.

What Olds found was that this process didn't create many orders for different combinations so they stopped the custom process and just produced the most frequent combination. It most likely also has the Ultra-sonic bell, even tho it is stated on the leadpipe!

The Ultra-Sonic Bell was a one-piece, seamless, bell, manufactured through an "explosion molding" process. In this, a tapered tube was inserted into a mold, with an explosive charge detonated within the tube. Upon explosion, the metal was forced to the approximate shape of the mold. A secondary process involved "spinning" the bell against a mandrel to achieve the final configuration.

This process was employed essentially because of economics. It was cheaper. Later, this process was replaced by "plasma welding", an even more economical process. Never were any musical characteristics, better or worse, associated with the different manufacturing processes.

Hope that helps you understand the horn!

Re: Info on Olds P-12 Custom

Salut Felix,

"Back in the day", Bobby Shew was an Olds endorser so if you have a good lead horn that might help explain it. If I rightly recall. the silver plating was very thin and peeled off fairly quickly.

A la prochaine,

Brian

Re: Info on Olds P-12 Custom

Brian, totally correct about the silver plating, very poor. In fact when I sold my '75 Custom and bought a Schilke I was astounded how great the plating was!

I was also haunted by the Olds valve problems they had in their last number of years. Had to send the horn back to have the/one valve worked on. Mind you, the fellow I sold the horn to loves it and wouldn't sell it back to me!

Re: Info on Olds P-12 Custom

I'd say somewhere around $5. I'll give ya $6 plus shipping if you want. That's above market value!
