Introducing the Luna Nuova

I have been working on this horn for a few weeks off and on. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time and finally got the chance to build a horn I wanted to (not something that had already been ordered). I really just felt like doing something unlike anything I have ever done before and this is what I ended up with. I will eventually do the whole thing in silver plate, but for the time I might leave it raw/polished and let whoever ends up with it decide what they want the finish to be. Currently Im not sure if Im going to hold on to it or sell it.

I am calling this horn the Luna Nuova.

The sound of it is just fantastic. Locks in very well in tune and plays well in the low as well as high registers. The tone is surprisingly flexible and the sound is just huge. Tomorrow I am meeting up with a very good local player who is going to let me shoot a little video of him playing it.

We're all on the edges of our seats waiting for the video. If it sounds as good as it looks, we should all be thrilled.

Re: Introducing the Luna Nuova

Looks beautiful! I'd love to try that! Looks like a shorter horn, or is that an optical illusion? reminds me of Joe's Rembrandts.

Re: Introducing the Luna Nuova

Interesting to say the least. Is the tuning slide something other than round cross section? Looks like it's wider than it is thick, but that may also be an optical illusion. Waiting for the clips!

Beautiful.

The tuning slide looks to have a piece of sheet bracing on it, just like the bell crook.

I dont know how to just post a video (if its possible on here). the link should open another window and play the video. The video is a local college student named Nathan Williams. He is playing the Luna Nuova. The tune is Up Jumped Spring.

The tuning slide is actually bent into a similar curve as the bell bow and has a smaller sheet in the crook to complement the bell.
