John Hagstrom about heavywall trumpets..

On Yamaha Website you can find a letter of J. Hagstrom (2nd trumpet of CSO), in which he speaks about the new Yamaha Chicago trumpet and says:

"...

There are many players who ... search for an instrument that will somehow turn whatever imput they give it into the "perfect" orchestral trumpet sound, and, if that is all the player is trying to achieve, there are already many instruments on the market that do a very nice job refining uneven imput into a more acceptable final product. That type of design is often achieved by incorporating extra weight into the instrument, although the advantage this brings comes at the cost of a capability to produce a variety of tone colors at medium and soft dynamics. When you play solos and practice alone, heavy instruments can feel very comfortable to play, and I played one myself for years before I joined the CSO. In fact, I would probably still be playing on one today if it had not become clear to me that I was going to be able to match my sound with the other players who could and did shape the color of their sound in the medium and soft dynamics. This included woodwind and string sounds in addition to the sound of the CSO brass section.

..."

What do you think about??

Thanks. Beppe

Well, obviously I disagree with some of that.

I have been playing instruments of various weights for years and have never had a problem producing a variety of sounds. It's up to the strength of the muscles that surround the embouchure and ones flexibilty of the soft tissue of the lip. All of that becomes secondary to the imagination and needs of the player.

Player + thought + physical ability = music

The equipment will allow more or less of those thoughts to be amplified into music.

The heaviness of the horn is not the only factor. If you take a conventional instrument and ONLY make it heavier, well, you'll have a heavier instrument. If you change other aspects of the instrument as well to balance the whole thing, you have an entirely different concept of trumpet making.

Arrivederci, mio amico!

No surprise, I'm with Manny.

I can change the sound on my trumpet to fit different stiles of music. I play a lot of different things. Tomorrow I will play with a small orchestra in front of a choir. On Monday I will be playing lead with a big band. Completely different sounds on the same trumpet.

One thing I will admit is that when I get lazy and don't think about it my sound is more on the mellow side. The thing is, that's the sound that I want so I guess I have the right trumpet for me.

Mikey is on a distinguished road
My Yamaha sounded sterile........

Like playing into a barrel...

Alas, I now have no C...

But don't have pity on me.......

For I am now blowing my Scodwell..

And everybody says, "I done well."

A new C will be along shortly...

Made by a gent round and portly...

As soon as the company goes off strike...

And the boss says, "Make a horn for Mike"....

But if he puts me in a stitch....

I can always wait for a new Eclipse!
