![]() | Jupiter flugel I'm test driving a new Jupiter flugelhorn from the local music store. It's a really nice horn. Top of the line with the 3rd valve trigger. It is very responsive. Very resonant. It has pretty good intonation and it slots well. The valves on it work nicely. It's sound seems nice until you hear it next to my old Olds flugel. The Olds has a really dark, smokey sound. I got the Olds used in 1975. It has developed some serious valve problems, so I've got to do something about having a flugel. The Jupiter is really nice but to me the sound is a little too bright. The Jupiter is better than the Olds in every way- freer blowing, better intonation. Except the sound. And sound is really what the flugel is about, right? Maybe I should send the Olds off for a valve job. Opinions?

| Fortissimo User | Hi Mike. I've got the 846L Jupiter flugel (no trigger on 3rd). I have two mouthpieces for it, the stock "#7" and a Wick 4 that I picked up somewhere. The Wick does darken the sound significantly but you have to be right on the ball to keep the intonation straight. If you're interested, pm me.... I'm willing to let it go for cheap. (Saving up for an Eclipse flugel and probably a GR mouthpiece). Toots |

![]() | If the valves on the Olds were perfect then would you prefer it to the Jupiter? If so, then I would have the Olds restored by Kanstul. Greg
