![]() | LA Benge - can put valves in backward? So on my LA Benge I can put the valves in backward!?! I have only ever had a few horns previously, an Olds Ambassador, an Olds Duratone piston/rotor soprano bugle, and a Benge soprano bugle, all of which were keyed so they could not go in backward. But this Benges key's or whatever you call them go on both sides of the valves, and allow the valves to be put in backward . . . is this normal? Or, is there something wrong with the guides? |

![]() | Re: LA Benge - can put valves in backward? That's normal for Benge and some other horns. The 1961 I used to have was the same way. A lot of horns if you face the numbers on the pistons forward they are in the right place. I can't remember if this is true for Benge or not - I sold mine so long ago!

Some valves only have a "key" on one side, others on both, but of different size and others 2 the same size allowing for being put in backward. When you remove the valves, put them back in starting with the 3rd, then 2nd, then 1st. Blow a bit of air through after inserting each one to assure that they are in right. Do not push the valve down without checking orientation first, it may stick in a very bad way.

Thanks, Robin. I have had to repair more than a few that were mistreated that way. My favorite valve guide design has always been the H.N. White triple leg guide with one leg much wider than the other two. This made misorientation virtually impossible, or, as Old 'Bill' Johnson used to say, "idiot proof". OLDLOU>>

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: LA Benge - can put valves in backward? Old-school urban legend about a guy playing lead in a show who almost always came in late after the break and nailed his first note, a double c. One evening during the break the second player switched the lead player's valves around. The lead player came back from break, picked up his horn and blew his eyeballs out of his head. Since I heard that story I always blow a little air through my horn before the first note.

![]() | Re: LA Benge - can put valves in backward? The schilke picc i play on (its the school's) drives me nuts you need to put the 4th valve in the opposite direction (in regards to the number on the valve) of the rest of them. I screw it up every time i take them out
