At Last - An Olds Recording I can actually Afford!!

Woohoo!

Just wanted to post to the forum as I've found what I thought to be impossible in today's internet market: an Olds Recording I could actually afford to buy!

Seems like good ones are going for $1000-1500 these days, totally out of my reach. A friend of mine got a very very nice one a few months back for around $1000, which was a damn good deal.

OK< the one I just got is a 1970s example with no cool engraving and no trigger, but what the heck? It seems in good condition (not got it yet) and I've played several '70s Olds and they seem to play the same to me.

First moves after I clean and service it? Look into getting a 3rd valve trigger fitted. Might experiment with heavy bottom caps and even in the end (don't kill me, but feel free to disagree) a modern fancy leadpipe like a Blackburn....we'll see.

Seems to me there are several nice vintage horn being pushed upbeyond their money by greed/auction sites. I love the Ambassador but still cannot believe people are asking $500 plus for some of them...thoughts?

Later
Bruce

You got it on Ebay? I wondered who won it. A very nice looking horn. I have an L12 flugel from the 70's and it is a delightful horn. I just traded for a Super/Ultrasonic from the 70's and it is a really good horn. I'm sure you'll love it.

I don't know who's paying $500 for Ambassadors. They are great student horns, but so are late-model Yamahas and you can get one in good condition (with shiny silver plating so the kid will actually like it) for $400 or less.

Some people are reaaaaly proud of their Ambassadors, like this one for $1300. So, $500 seems like a bargain by comparison.

Congratulations! I just bought a Special, a Super and a Super Star Ultrasonic. I am working my way up to a Recording.

BTW, just for kicks, I looked at the Olds catalogs and pricelists that are posted online, and according to the official Olds progaganda, the offset 2nd valve was originally marketed as a device to make holding the trumpet more comfortable for the left hand during long sessions - apparently the Recording was designed for the use that the Studio later took over (long recording sessions).

Re: At Last - An Olds Recording I can actually Afford!!

Well, the horn is not that good-looking, but the interior metal is excellent, and it plays like a Recording should. The lacquer has seen better days on the outside, but I used the horn for 2 years as a rough use h orn, and I think you will get s real lot of enjoyment out of playing it - play 10 - looks 3. Make it sing.
