Measuring Bore Size.....The Facts????!

Hey there -

I hear a lot these days from sellers and players on bore size. It occurred to me today that I'm still unsure where it's actually measured....

So where should the bore be taken? at the 2nd valve slide? main tuning slide? Seems like a dumb question, but if I don't ask then I'll never learn.

Oh, and many apologies if this repeats a past thread, I couldn't find one.

thanks!
Bruce

Re: Measuring Bore Size.....The Facts????!

It is not standardized, it doesn't matter anyways, it tells you nothing about the horn. The Bach ML and L valve block are exactly the same. Go figure.

Forget about where it is measured. That knowledge and 3 hours of practice could get all of your major scales together.

Re: Measuring Bore Size.....The Facts????!

Actually depends on the horn and what specifically they are talking about.

Typically they use the second valve as a "standard" but not always!! This is because some horns are polybore horns. Some like a V-raptor go up and down, others like a Vidabonna Bach get bigger, still others have different bore tuning slides(even each slide can be different too) as options like the Wild Thing, and yet others still have "chokes" in the bell where a horn is say .470 all the way from the main tuning slide on till the bell where it drops back to .464.

Hope this helps you decipher what is going on.

Fun!!!

Bore size is measured at the inside of the second valve slide.

I fairly sure that bore size is measured inside the 2nd valve slide

just curious... is it measured inside the 2nd valve tuning slide itself or inside the 2nd valve tubing on the block of the horn?

Re: Measuring Bore Size.....The Facts????!

Not the outer tuning slide tubing. Inside the inner tube will do. The rest should be the same as it passes through the whole second valve tubing section.
