Modified Bach Strad

Hello everyone, I am looking to buy my first pro horn, and I found an ad. It says the horn is a Bach Strad 37, Silver, with a special third valve slide that has been professionally modified to allow kicking out for challenging excerpts like Carmen. Has anyone played one of these that has had a conversion like this? It could be my first good horn.

It probably just has one of those long stop rods installed on it. You can adjust the nuts on it to allow you to play a low F natural without worrying about the slide falling out.

Re: Modified Bach Strad

Carmen calls for a low concert Eb, as does Ein Heldenleben. The stock third valve has a built in extention at the end of the slide--it can be pulled out and the concert Eb (our low f) is played 123. Arban mentions a "German Cavalry" trick of pulling the third slide--23 combinations can be played 3; the 123 combinations can be played 13, and there is really no compelling reason to have a quick draw third valve slide.

That being said, whoever went to the trouble of making that modification must have cared for that horn a lot, and well loved used horns are the best kind.

Good luck!

Re: Modified Bach Strad

I really hope it is a good horn. I can't wait to play it, and it will hopefully be my first pro horn!

I knew there was a French connection somewhere! Wouldn't have thought German though. This "trick" is quite effective on A picc when playing C trumpet parts.

Re: Modified Bach Strad

Hello,
If this Strad has been modified, it's probably a bit older. You'd probably do better to buy an older Strad than something new off the shelf today.
Good luck

Check pitches. Bring a friend who plays well in tune, a tuner, and your ears.

You sound very excited, and I hope it's all you're looking for and more!

See how much spread exists amongst partials with first 3 positions. And the usual suspects of D, Eb, and E.

I mention this not to toss a bucket of cold water, it's just the sort of thing one considers after the fact when we're in a section. Not a bad thing to get a leg up on before the fact.

Good Luck!

Yes, I'm very excited. I hope to play it for an extended period of time before I buy it. I don't really have a good player around here to play with, but I do have a tuner!

Re: Modified Bach Strad

i just bought that horn 2 months ago and i'm not to happy with it. the 3nd valve is messed it has a little this on it shaped like small lips and it rubbs against the valve casing causing it to wear and stick. not only that the horn is really dirty even when i took it out of the box all the slides were all warn and nasty. i wash it every week and it just gets more and more dirty. i dont really eat and play or anything like that, so i havent been happy with it, i'm thinking of changing it when i get home, i'm teaching in africa right now so i got kind of screwed haha.

The acidity of your saliva could be reacting with your valve oil causing stuff to build up in your horn. Try different oil.
