Monettes - let's hear the real skinny on 'em

I've noticed a few people have Monette horns here. I've never seen one of these in person, and from what I have heard about the prices (again only hearsay) it's hard to imagine myself having or spending the money on one, but I find that I REALLY like the sound people get from them.

So how about it...are these things all they're cracked up to be? Do the people on the forum that own them think they got their money's worth?

Re: Monettes - let's hear the real skinny on 'em

bigtiny,
it is NEVER the gun. It is he that pulls the trigger.

That being said, I bought a Monette 10 years ago and replaced it last year with a new Monette. I guess that demonstrates my opinion.
I have 13 other trumpets though that also get a fair amount of play. I believe in the right ax for the job and NOBODY makes one horn that fits all even although many players have learned to make due.

I believe the Monettes are more resonant which increases security, but locks you more into the colors built into the horn. I happen to identify with those colors. Those instruments hold their value better than any other brand, so that makes them much less expensive than the retail price would indicate. Monette does not build FRANKENTRUMPETS. They are thought out from front to back and sold as a solution not a DIY offering. Does this make them better? Not to everybody. Some people do not want the Monette color spectrum or resonance. That is cool too.
The bottom line is that we all have an opinion and some are based on facts and others on hearsay. The word Monette in a thread brings the best and worst out of an internet community! You owe it to yourself to at least play these fine instruments. The rest you decide after the first hand experience.

Re: Monettes - let's hear the real skinny on 'em

Hi, I also believe the Monette is just great, in both concept and delivery, I have a Anja III, it is by far the best sound for me that I have played. I've been playing for 55 years. My likes on sound might not be everyone's taste, but it suites me. I have another comming soon, an extra light "C" horn. I hope it sounds like a "C" horn should sound to me.

Re: Monettes - let's hear the real skinny on 'em

I have an Ajna II and it is the most responsive horn that I have ever played. I don't ever have to think about the instrument, unless I am out of practice, then I am more concerned about myself, but the horn never gets in the way, it is really transparent....

It seems like it would be worth the trip to the great northwest to get the opportunity to try one of these fine instruments.
These horns seem to be a rare thing in South Florida.

clousemiester-

If you get a chance, drive a few hours west and check out the Naples Philharmonic. Matt Sonneborn is the principal. Matt is a MONSTER. He normally plays a Monette LT, although he also owns a Raja.

Re: Monettes - let's hear the real skinny on 'em

The key is not whether a Monette is the right axe for your situation. I feel ANY ambitious player OWES it to themselves to at least try out cutting edge technology, regardless of which company!

Other companies with extensive R&D would be Schilke, Yamaha, Taylor, Courtois, Selmer, Edwards, Eclipse.

Even the companies that are not stretching the sonic envelope deserve recognition for giving us more and better choices: NYTC, Kanstul, Getzen.
I guess what I am trying to say is that the marketing tools that tie players to a brand really do not do justice to the music industry. They just change the balance of horns purchased. if more than 50% of symphony orchestras play Yamaha, that is no better than the present predominance of Bach instruments.

The agricultural industry figured this out a long time ago: MONOCULTURE has many negative facets. It only has profitability going for it.

Re: Monettes - let's hear the real skinny on 'em

Hi,
I have 4 Monette trumpets. I guess that says how I feel about them. I try to keep an open mind about pros and cons. I have had some problems and I am always looking for something that will work better for me. So far I can't find anything that I would rather play.

I am a part time player and that is a problem in itself. I don't always set up the same way depending on how much I can practice. I think when I practice a lot, the Monette works the best. When I can't practice I sometimes have trouble.

I go back to my Bach all the time to get a measurement or control on how I feel about the trumpet and there is always a big difference and I go back to the Monette.

After all of my indecisiveness I'm glad I went with Monette and I have another one on order.

Re: Monettes - let's hear the real skinny on 'em

I have tried 4 different Monette models, two newer and two older, and didn't end up wanting any of them. I didn't get that "I have to have one now!" feeling like I did in the first 5 minutes of playing a Raptor, or my Rembrandt flugel (speaking of cutting edge technology, don't forget the Marcinkiewicz Rembrandt line)! To be completely fair, one of the Monettes I couldn't test for very long since it was raw brass and I am allergic, but there was nothing about it that made me wish I could play it longer, either. I guess there's something out there for everyone, but no Monette in my future! That's okay - I don't want to have to sell my car to buy one, anyway!

I've never played a horn, but have played the mpcs for 12 years now. I can olny imagine what the horns feel/play like. Someday I'd like to venture to the factory and try some of the shop demos....
