| My new Trumpet? Hi, i'm looking to get a new trumpet in a few months and i've been fighting hard looking for one. I'm looking for a Proffesional Bb trumpet that handles very well in the high registers, and is a good marching band, symphonic, and jazz horn. It must have a one piece bell and not too bright a tone, but not to dark either. I'd like it to have a first valve trigger, because that's what i'm used to. If there is a vintage trumpet like this, do not hesitate to recommend it, i'd rather revive a vintage trumpet any how. Also, if there are companies that you think i should look into that I might find a close match for me in, post that too. Any and all advice is appreciated Thanx- Mt2 |

I think you want a trumpet. I am curious why you want a one piece bell. Some respected trumpet makers make 2 piece bells...Monette, Lawler and Eclipse just to mention a few. Let's see other than that a horn that is good for high registers marching band symphonic and jazz Would be Bach Schilke Getzen Holton Benge Yamaha Jupiter Zeu....no, I can't even type that! King Conn a vintage King a vintage Reynolds a vintage Olds, but not one with a 2 piece bell etc, etc. Do NOT buy a dreaded Monette, Eclipse, or Lawler with those lousy two piece bells! -cw- Last edited by Solar Bell : 04-12-2008 at 03:36 PM. | |

| Re: My new Trumpet? Maynard the 1st played a Monette with a 2-piece bell, his tone was pretty clear. Chris Gekker also has no problem with clarity. I think the point that was made above is that 'One Piece' 'Hand-hammered' bells, and 'medium-large' bores, etc, etc are marketing terms which manufacturers use to distract us. I say this because, whereas these terms are useful in understanding the general construction of the instrument, they do tend to say very little about the instruments playing characteristics, nor do they reflect what the musical/sonic qualities of the instrument would be. There are many factors that go into making a great playing horn - and no horn plays itself! Some players can make a super extra large bore instrument (which we would be led to believe would impart a 'dark, teutonic' sound) SIZZLE - think of Maynard on his Holton, Arturo on a Schilke X3, etc. The reverse, of course, can also be true. Bottom line - play a bunch of horns. To now make myself a hypocrite; a Yamaha, Schilke, or Getzen is probably what you're looking for. Best, and good luck! -db |

![]() | Re: My new Trumpet? I think you guys have diverted from the original question. The two piece, one piece bell controversy is without merit. We all know this is a misguided requirement. I would suggest you look for an original Getzen Eterna Severinsen Model with the star on the bell. Get the braces modernized if they are the original braces. First valve triggers can be added. I am sure there are others like a Schilke B7 or B2. What would you all recommend from the Schilke line? |

| Re: My new Trumpet? The B5 is a medium large bore with a copper bell. Great trumpet, not as bright as a B6. S32 medium large bore with yellow brass bell. It will feel more like a Bach. Neither horn will have a trigger. -cw- Last edited by Solar Bell : 04-12-2008 at 09:18 PM. |

| Re: My new Trumpet? Find a good 37 or 43 Bach with a trigger (would not get hung up on a trigger) and forget about it till you are aware of exactly what you want out of a trumpet. If you like a little more open feel get LR180S horns with reverse leadpipe and lightweight body, mostly playing preference. There are some really great trumpets to choose from. As for one all around trumpet a good Bach is always a solid choice. If you settle on a genre or two you may add a horn to color more that direction. Sure Yamaha, Real Benge, Schilke, and others are all solid choices, but they seem to all revolve around the Bach universe for mainstream stuff. I am not saying it is the holy grail of trumpets just a very solid choice which can be used in almost any genre successfully. Like previously mentioned forget about how many pieces they make the bell out of and just get a good horn. |

| Re: My new Trumpet? I would recommend a Bach with a 43 bell. I've found that it tends to be a bit more free blowing and a little on the darker side than the 37, but my opinion is biased.... ~PSH |

| Re: My new Trumpet? It really makes me sad to think of a Schilke on a marching field....I would reccomend a lesser but solid horn for marching, say an Olds Ambassador, and a better horn for indoor situations. Schilkes are great horns, but a little on the delicate side to march with. A great marching horn would be something like a Schilke MII, which plays like a B5, and a B1 or B5 for indoors. Of coarse, there are a ton of other options, so get out there and play as many as you can! |
