![]() | Mystery Horn...Pics Looks like a 1920's horn. Satin silver. Bright points. Says "Peerless American" on bell. Gold wash in bell. No serial number. I've seen the flowery engraving before on other stencils. Once you get to know it, it's not a bad little horn. No pinky ring--never had one. Any ideas who might have made this one? (Trying to upload a few pics!) AND, what's the best way to shine up one of these? Thanks!

| Forte User | Re: Mystery Horn...Pics Welcome to the forum. That horn is sure a mystery. Obviously very vintage, maybe 20's-30's. Straight cross braces and no tuning slide brace. I see a stop rod also. The only thing Horn-u-copia has on the tradename list is Peerless American , clarinet, student . but no other info. I would suspect your horn is a student "stencil" made by a major manufacturer for some retailer. It looks to have an elongated 3rd slide to be in place of a finger ring or adjustable slide for tuning. I assume it doesn't have a specific country of origin printed on it somewhere? Many of these horns can't be specifically identified unless the documentation of a manufacturer mentions that they made horns for this stencil name at some point. Has a couple of Conn hints, but I can't id it. A very generic design to me. You can find a lot of threads on the forum asking for identification, but not many are traceable. Wright's silver polish is good, but MAAS metal polish is the best I have used. Really took the old tarnish off my raw brass horns and the American Standard cornet.

| Forte User | Re: Mystery Horn...Pics I would agree. Trumpet design looks like maybe a Cleveland variation from quick look on HUC.

![]() | Re: Mystery Horn...Pics When I saw the pics I realised this horn looks like the one I have in my collection. It's a Panamerican trumpet from the mid 30's and it was made by Conn. Conn used to made horns for independent companies that no longer exist. The name American, America, Panamerican and such are the id of generic horns to this Conn line. Claude Gordon used to call the peashooter for their small bore and my trumpet teacher used to call them clarinet trumpets because of the same. These are good sound horns very easy to make a sound. My oldest brother used to have one like this too. For shinning I use Tarni-shield by 3M diluted 50-50 after washing the outside of the horn with dishwashing soap and lukewarm water. I dry it off with a chamois rag and apply the product. After the application is dry I then proceed to wipe the horn and remove the dry coating from it. It will give you a beautiful shine and will last quite a long time (between four to six months) if you use the instrument and wipe it often with a silver polish rag. I sed Tarni-shiel in a Courtois Flugel horn that I keep in storage for seven years. It silver was all but black and not too pleaseant to look at after less than a hour the horn was back on its glory. Try it, the Tarni-shiel may cost you something between 10-15 dollars, but will last for long time. I bought my last bottle about seven years ago and still have enough cream to last cople of more years and I have six silverplate trumpets. Last edited by lushcot714; 10-04-2008 at 10:22 AM.
